About The Eight Bells, Jevington

The Eight Bells has been at the heart of the historic village of Jevington for centuries. Nobody quite knows why or when it got its name, but its colourful past is well known — from tunnels built by ruthless smugglers to an era of genteel tea gardens. Our latest chapter began in May 2020, with a new team, led by hospitality entrepreneur Phil Cameron and operations director Joe Collier through Headland Venues Ltd. We’ve had some great national press and been voted Best Sussex Pub. We want to keep that reputation, so would love to hear from anyone who’d like to help us achieve that simple goal. If you’re looking for great food and service in a picturesque country pub, look no further! We’re just five minutes drive from the world-famous Seven Sisters cliffs and Beachy Head, and you can walk, cycle or hike right onto the Downs or deep into Friston Forest from our doorstep. We’re also surrounded with sport and culture, with the Eastbourne International Tennis Open, Glyndebourne Opera and the Charleston literary festival all taking place nearby. Oh, and yes, little Jevington, with its population of around a hundred, really is the birthplace of the Banoffee Pie. Ian Dowding, head chef at the now-closed Hungry Monk, and its owner, Nigel MacKenzie dreamed it up in 1972. Our own take has pride of place on the menu — and apparently Ian approves!
