About The Incorporation of Wrights in Glasgow
The Incorporation of Wrights in Glasgow is a charity registered in Scotland. Charity number: SCO10016. We are the largest of the 14 Incorporations (or Guilds) which form the Trades House of Glasgow. Our Wrights’ heritage is in skilled woodworking – from making ships to violins, longbows to furniture, as well as glassmaking and gilding. We were likely founded around 850 years ago, as many buildings then were made of wood and later of wood and stone. The trades guild comprised of the Wrights, Coopers and Masons, but in 1600 the Wrights (the carpenters) were allowed to become an independent incorporation on their own, setting standards for their work and securing a monopoly over carpentry in the city. For centuries our skills have shaped our great city. Today as a charity we continue to help the people of Glasgow through benevolence and education. The Wrights are continuing a long tradition of giving. We help people to develop skills and increase their life chances, and we support those most in need. We celebrate fine artistry and craftsmanship – very fitting in a city that was at the heart of the Arts and Crafts movement and that is now enjoying a cultural renaissance. Our members are men and women from a wide range of backgrounds and professions. We come from near and far, and many of us join to celebrate our Glasgow connections. Our dinners take place in the Trades Hall, the fine Robert Adam building in the Merchant City. They blend fun with formality – and the warm welcome for which Glasgow is famous. Well-known Wrights have included Sir William Burrell, founder of the Burrell Collection; Sir William Arrol, who built the Forth Railway Bridge and London’s Tower Bridge, and John Keppie, mentor to Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
