About The People Act: Legislative Theatre

Welcome to The People Act: a hub for legislative theatre and creative civic practice, where democracy is participatory, inclusive, and fun. We bring residents, policymakers, and activists together through legislative theatre. The four-stage process — Watch, Act, Propose, Vote — combines creativity with civic engagement: community members create original plays based on lived experiences addressing policy challenges; audiences step onstage to improvise alternatives and test new solutions in real time; policymakers and citizens work together to shape these ideas into specific policy proposals; and everyone votes on the outcomes, with policymakers committing to immediate action. Originally developed in Rio de Janeiro's city council chambers, legislative theatre has since spread globally, addressing critical issues from housing and healthcare to climate action and social equity. The People Act, led by Katy Rubin, partners with governments and advocacy groups to develop and amplify this practice across the UK and internationally, and builds capacity among community leaders to design and implement new initiatives. By putting participatory democracy on stage, we're fostering more equitable public policy, increasing citizen engagement, and rebuilding public trust in political systems - one performance at a time.
