About The Residence Society
Since 1988, the Residence Society (ResSoc) has been a key player in student advocacy and community life, playing a key role in fostering a positive and inclusive living environment for all students in residence. It originated from the Main Campus Residence Council (MCRC) and Jean Royce Hall Council (JRHC), created to manage co-ed residences at Queen’s. In 2009, MCRC was incorporated, providing greater autonomy with respect to Queen’s University. In 2013, MCRC and JRHC merged to form ResSoc, aiming for equal job opportunities, consistent Non-Academic Misconduct (NAM) procedures, and a unified voice at the university. Though ResSoc no longer oversees the NAM system, our staff supports students through the conduct process as needed. In 2021, ResSoc underwent a brand redesign and organizational restructuring, adopting a modern logo and reflecting changes in the Residence NAM system, where Residence Facilitators were phased out. As a resident, you automatically become a member of ResSoc, gaining access to a range of free resources, programs, services, and opportunities, as well as having your interests represented to the broader University community. ResSoc encompasses 4,700+ members across all residence buildings on Main and West Campus, including Adelaide Hall, Ban Righ Hall, Brant House, Chown Hall, David C. Smith House, Endaayaan – Tkanónsote, Gordon and Brockington House, Harkness Hall, Jean Royce Hall, John Deutsch University Centre (JDUC), Leggett Hall, Leonard Hall, McNeill House, Morris Hall, Victoria Hall, Waldron Tower, and Watts Hall. The ResSoc is governed by the General Assembly (GA), which is primarily composed of hired and elected student representatives, such as House Presidents and Executive members. GA serves as the administrative head of ResSoc, overseeing all management duties, enforcing policies, and maintaining an extensive list of services. Currently, ResSoc employs 47 staff members, all dedicated to improving the residence experience.
