About The SAIL Initiative

The SAIL Initiative is focused on turning publicly funded research into economic impact in Canada. It has two parts: 1) The Simple Agreement for Innovation Licensing (SAIL) is a freely available, streamlined framework for tech transfer from publicly funded research institutions to startups. It is designed to be adopted without requiring that universities change their IP policies. 2) The SAIL Fund, a not-for-profit venture philanthropic fund that we are building to support pre-revenue startups and founders licensing IP arising from publicly-funded research. Unlike for-profit funds, it recycles any returns to support the next generation of innovation in Canada. Both SAIL and SAIL Fund are based on rigorous research and are the result of community engagement and input from founders, investors, universities, industry groups, non-profits, and public funding agencies from across Canada. Together, SAIL and the SAIL Fund seek to bridge the gap between publicly funded research and public benefit for Canadians, and to give founders a chance to stay and build in Canada. The SAIL Initiative is built on engagement with a national community of innovation stakeholders. We are committed to collaborative and evidence-based improvement to Canada’s early-stage innovation ecosystem, and we’d love to hear from you.
