About The Sophie Lancaster Foundation
In 2007, Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend, both alternative and expressing their individuality through their own unique style, were violently attacked by a gang of five boys in a park in Bacup, Lancashire, simply because of how they looked. The brutal assault left them both unconscious, and while her boyfriend eventually recovered, Sophie remained in a coma for 13 days before tragically passing away on 24 August 2007, at just 20 years old. Sophie’s Mum, Sylvia, founded the Sophie Lancaster Foundation to advocate for the alternative community and ensure alternative subculture hate crime is recognised and its victims find justice. We’re dedicated to challenging prejudice and promoting the message that difference should be celebrated, not feared. We work to combat the stereotypes and discrimination faced by alternative communities through education, ensuring that Sophie’s legacy lives on through our commitment to kindness, acceptance, and tolerance.
