About The Wildlife Information Centre

The Wildlife Information Centre (TWIC) is the regional biological records centre for south-east and parts of central Scotland. We collect, curate, and share high-quality data on wildlife to support informed decision-making and conservation action. As an independent, not-for-profit organisation with charitable status, TWIC provides trusted, objective wildlife information to a wide range of users, including local authorities, environmental consultants, researchers, and conservation organisations. We act as a central hub for biological recording, working to expand knowledge of terrestrial, freshwater, and marine species across our region. Our goal is to maintain a comprehensive and accessible record of local biodiversity, supporting both conservation and sustainable development. We promote open access to data wherever possible, while ensuring sensitive information is protected to prevent harm to wildlife. Our data services underpin key activities such as planning application screening, ecological impact assessments, and conservation management planning. Through collaboration and data-sharing, we help organisations make evidence-based decisions that benefit both people and nature. The ongoing development of TWIC and its services is funded by grant aid from NatureScot, service level agreements or contracts with Local Authorities and conservation organisations, income from data requests, contract work, projects as well as memberships and charitable donations. TWIC also benefits from contributions from its volunteers.
