About Translational Surgical Oncology
The interdisciplinary department "Translational Surgical Oncology" researches computer and robot-assisted systems for surgery at the interface between engineering, computer science, and medicine. Our research goal is to optimize therapy along the surgical treatment path and improve outcomes using methods of artificial intelligence, robotics, and sensor technology. Increasingly powerful technological developments in surgery, such as new devices and technologies, generate a vast amount of valuable data that can be used to improve personalized therapy. However, the use of this data, especially in complex, time-critical surgical situations, is limited and heavily dependent on the experience of the surgical staff. The goal is to quantify surgical skills and expertise using Surgical Data Science, robotics, and new sensors, and to transfer these to machines. Our research focuses on three essential areas to pave the way for the next generation of robotic surgery: The research and methodological focuses are on machine learning techniques for video-based workflow analysis, soft tissue navigation, and the semi-automatic execution of robot-assisted procedures. To address the lack of data, we are working on the synthetic generation and simulation of realistic training data and on proof-of-concept studies to enable translation into clinical practice.
