About Transplant Education for Living Legacies

Life is the greatest gift you can give. That belief is at the heart of Transplant Education for Living Legacies (TELL), a South African, patient-founded non-profit dedicated to transforming the landscape of organ and tissue donation through education, advocacy, and conversation. Founded by individuals with lived transplant experience, including two who received life-saving lung transplants, TELL exists to turn personal journeys into powerful change. This unique perspective allows us to identify real-world barriers within the transplant system and actively work to address them. South Africa faces a critical shortage of organ and tissue donors. One of the biggest challenges lies in the identification and referral of potential donors, compounded by limited awareness and persistent misinformation. Importantly, even if someone wishes to be a donor, it is their family who makes the final decision. That’s why our work focuses on two key areas: ✔️ Education: empowering healthcare professionals, patients, and the public with accurate, practical knowledge about organ and tissue donation ✔️ Conversation: encouraging South Africans to Tell Your Tribe and make their wishes known At TELL, we believe awareness alone is not enough, meaningful conversations save lives. Our mission is bold: to end the transplant waiting list by changing and leading the conversation around organ and tissue donation in South Africa. Because when people talk, families know. And when families know, lives are saved.
