About Trebaluger Equine Rescue Centre

In 2015, with the help of family, friends, and volunteers, Samantha Lake formed Trebaluger Equine Rescue Centre. We believe that every horse, pony, donkey, and hybrid has the right to a happy and healthy life, away from fear and neglect. The centre occupies approximately 42,000 m2 of rented land, with a few stables and plenty of wooded areas that provide much-needed shade during the long, hot summers. The centre has grown over the years from just a few horses to now housing 34 permanent equine residents, a colony of cats, a rescue dog with Leishmania, a pig, and numerous ducks and chickens. The equines roam freely, as nature intended, in different herd groups across our fields. Each resident is fed twice a day with a diet tailored to their specific needs, and ad-lib hay is provided for them to forage. A few equines are stabled overnight for reasons of health or their own safety, but otherwise enjoy freedom. Many of our residents require medical management of long-term conditions, others have behavioural issues - sadly not uncommon, given their often traumatic history. A team of volunteers help Sam to tend to the animals twice a day, every day. In addition, much of Sam's time is spent visiting schools to promote improved welfare for equines, emphasizing the importance of handling horses with kindness and their need for freedom, not confinement. Sam also meets with local government officials to continue to raise the pressing issue of the need to change Spanish laws to improve equine welfare. Currently, the laws don't adequately protect their health and well-being, and Sam continues to advocate for this. As a non-profit organisation, we operate entirely with a small team of dedicated volunteers. We rely on generous donations from tourists, local supporters, fundraising events, and our online followers to help cover the costs of feeding, veterinary care, farriery, and equipment, etc. We are always very grateful for any amount received. Thank you
