About UNESCO Global Geopark Sunnhordland
SUNNHORDLAND GEOPARK The islands, fjords and mountains in Sunnhordland offer an abundance of rich and varied geology that has shaped both the region and western Norway to a remarkable degree. The region's geological phenomena have left their mark as far away as Copenhagen and St. Croix in the Caribbean. Sunnhordland Geopark was recognised as a Norwegian Geopark in 2018 and as a UNESCO Global Geopark in May 2023. Sunnhordland Geopark with UNESCO status is a solid and positive regional marker that will promote tourism and give future generations insight into the development of the landscape and how our culture has been shaped by the rock material at hand. The knowledge acquired will increase respect for the nature in which and from which we live.
