About United Midcoast Charities

UMC plays a pivotal role in providing financial backing and organizational support to strengthen nonprofits in Knox and Waldo Counties working in the areas of food, housing, health & safety, and economic security. Through a thorough application and review process, in the past 34 years, UMC has awarded grants totaling more than $10 million to hundreds of local agencies. Here are the local agencies that received funding in 2023. Those who know us well often describe us as a blend of a super nimble United Way, a hyper-local Nonprofit Association, and a development consultant all wrapped up into one. We buoy our partner agencies with resources that would otherwise be out of reach due to their small size and our rural location providing equitable access to critical resources and information to more than 40 organizations. Today, UMC remains the primary supporter of partner agencies in our two-county service area, ultimately impacting 1 in 3 people who live here. We take the guesswork out of giving! Through a detailed grant application and review process, over the past 40 years, UMC has awarded more than $13.1 million to hundreds of local agencies that have been thoroughly vetted. When you give to UMC you know the money is going to partner agencies that are financially sound, with effective programs that are creating collective impact in our region. UMC’s Board of Directors oversees our grant application and review process. Stronger safety net. Stronger Community. United we do more!
