About University of Guelph Debate Club

The Debate club at Guelph aims to build confidence by the expression of ideas through public speaking. That comfortability speaking in front of others has utility in multiple facets of life - from interviews, school presentations, to discussions in college seminars! Debate strengthens that ability, as well as helping students to see both sides of issues. Debaters flex their analytical muscles, learning to reveal the weak points in opponent’s arguments. They learn to explain their own ideas and assess different viewpoints, whether in a debate round, a political discussion, a classroom, or a written essay. But the benefits of debating are not limited to the skills built while students are speaking — the preparation phase for competition teaches critical thinking and research skills, as well. As F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.”
