About Urban Green Initiative
Houston is one of America's great cities — resilient, diverse, and full of possibility. It's also one of the most heat-vulnerable and underforested urban landscapes in the country. The neighborhoods that need relief the most have the least green cover to provide it. Urban Green Initiative believes that can change. And we're here to change it. We plant ultra-dense native forests across Greater Houston using the Miyawaki method — a science-backed technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Dr. Akira Miyawaki that grows thriving, self-sustaining ecosystems up to 10× faster than conventional tree planting. These aren't ornamental trees. They're living, breathing infrastructure that delivers real results for real communities: 🌡️ Cooling entire city blocks by reducing urban heat island temperatures 🌧️ Absorbing stormwater to protect neighborhoods from flooding 💨 Filtering air pollutants through dense, layered native canopy 🦋 Restoring biodiversity and bringing native wildlife back to the urban core Founder Raj Dharamshi launched Urban Green Initiative out of a deep love for Houston and a conviction that every neighborhood — regardless of zip code — deserves the cooling, healing power of a forest. UGI is committed to building those forests where they matter most. We partner with corporations, city agencies, universities, and community organizations to find sites, mobilize volunteers, and grow lasting urban ecosystems across Greater Houston. Together, we're proving that a greener, more resilient Houston isn't just possible — it's already taking root. 🌿 Join us: urbangreeninitiative.org 📬 info@urbangreeninitiative.org
