About Welcome Strategies

Welcome Strategies is an Arizona-based consulting practice that specializes in creative community engagement, network development, and strategic advising for nonprofits, government, businesses, and philanthropy. In collaboration with diverse partners, Welcome Strategies designs innovative and effective engagement strategies, with approaches grounded in community and civic wellbeing–ensuring expansive stakeholder inclusion and resulting in processes that are as valuable as the product. Strategists and founders Alex Nelson and Jaime Dempsey are both civic health practitioners, artists, and former directors of the Arizona Commission on the Arts, with deep experience in local and national philanthropy, community leadership, and the nonprofit and public sectors. As an outgrowth of their community engagement work, Nelson and Dempsey leverage their creative and professional experience to connect smart community ideas/enterprises to capital held by donors, philanthropic organizations, corporations, and government agencies, seeding powerful partnerships and ensuring maximum return on investment. Most significant and central to their practice, Nelson’s and Dempsey’s approaches prioritize and honor communities’ perspectives, stories, aspirations, and the uniqueness of the places they call home. With a strong focus on assets and potential, they design quantitative research elements (such as surveys and stakeholder data analysis) alongside qualitative research approaches (such as innovative resident and community leader listening sessions, community planning activities, focus groups, interviews), encouraging connection and building a sense of excitement and ownership in process and outcome.
