SUMMARY: As the Dell Rapids Cashier, you’ll support Active Generations’ rural congregate dining program by welcoming participants, processing meal payments and donations, maintaining accurate participant records, and completing required program documentation. This position serves as a friendly and reliable point of contact for diners while helping ensure the Dell Rapids meal site operates smoothly and efficiently.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Welcome congregate dining participants and provide friendly, respectful, and helpful customer service. Collect meal payments and participant donations and accurately provide change when needed. Maintain accurate records of payments, donations, meal participation, and other required program information. Balance collected funds, prepare accurate deposits, and complete the deposit and related documentation daily.

Complete and submit required weekly, monthly, and other program paperwork accurately and on time. Assist new participants with required enrollment and NAPIS documentation and maintain annual participant updates as directed. Maintain confidentiality of participant information and appropriately handle program records. Provide participants with basic information about congregate dining, Meals on Wheels, and other Active Generations programs and services.

Communicate participant questions, concerns, program changes, or operational issues to Nutrition leadership as appropriate. Maintain an organized and welcoming meal-site environment and assist with basic site needs as necessary. Collaborate with Nutrition team members, volunteers, community partners, and others to support successful meal service.

Attend required meetings and training and assist with training others on site procedures when requested. Perform additional duties as assigned by Nutrition leadership.

EDUCATION

& EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED preferred. Previous cashier, customer service, food service, administrative, or similar experience preferred. Experience handling cash and completing basic financial transactions is a plus. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Friendly and service-oriented with strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to accurately handle money, make change, balance transactions, and prepare deposits. Detail-oriented and organized with the ability to maintain accurate records and complete required paperwork. Dependable and able to work independently while maintaining communication with the broader Nutrition team. Comfortable interacting with older adults and community members.

Ability to maintain confidentiality, follow established procedures, solve routine problems, and adapt to changing program needs. Basic computer and technology skills preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS: Regularly sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach throughout the shift. Use hands and fingers to handle money, paperwork, meal tickets, office supplies, and other materials.

Communicate effectively with participants, coworkers, volunteers, and community members. Perform tasks requiring close visual attention, including handling money and completing documentation. Occasionally lift and carry materials or supplies weighing up to 20 pounds. Move throughout the congregate dining area as needed to assist participants and support site operations.

This position is in person and primarily takes place at the Dell Rapids congregate dining location. The work environment is generally community-facing and includes regular interaction with older adults, volunteers, team members, and community partners. The position requires reliability and consistent attendance during scheduled meal-service hours.

Schedules may be adjusted based on program and operational needs. LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT: Reports to: Nutrition leadership. Direct reports: None.
