Job description

NOVA Engineering & Environmental is a nationally recognized engineering consulting firm providing geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and inspection (CMT), environmental consulting, building code compliance, building envelope consulting, and forensic engineering services. We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineer (Structural & Building Assessment) to join our Fort Lauderdale, Florida team.

This position is ideal for a licensed Professional Engineer with expertise in structural plan review, Milestone Inspections, 40-Year Recertification evaluations, Threshold Inspections, and structural consulting services throughout South Florida. The successful candidate will play a key role in evaluating existing structures, reviewing structural designs for code compliance, and providing engineering guidance on both new construction and existing building assessment projects.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Engineer will serve as a technical leader supporting a diverse portfolio of commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential projects throughout South Florida. This role will focus heavily on structural plan review, existing building evaluations, Milestone Inspections, 40-Year Recertifications, Threshold Inspections, and code compliance services.

The successful candidate will work closely with property owners, architects, contractors, attorneys, municipalities, and internal engineering teams to evaluate structural conditions, review engineering documents, provide technical oversight, and support clients throughout the lifecycle of their facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct and oversee Milestone Inspections and 40-Year Recertification evaluations for existing structures in accordance with Florida statutes and local jurisdiction requirements. Perform structural condition assessments and engineering evaluations of commercial, residential, institutional, and mixed-use buildings. Review structural plans, calculations, shop drawings, and engineering documents for compliance with applicable building codes and project requirements.

Sign and seal engineering reports, structural evaluations, structural plan reviews, and other engineering documents as required. Support and perform Threshold Inspection services in accordance with Florida Building Code requirements. Provide technical oversight and engineering support for Construction Materials Testing (CMT), Special Inspection, and quality assurance programs.

Review field reports, laboratory testing data, engineering analyses, and technical documentation for completeness and accuracy. Collaborate with building owners, condominium associations, architects, contractors, municipalities, and design professionals to resolve structural and code-related issues. Assist with forensic assessments, structural distress investigations, and property damage evaluations as needed.

Mentor junior engineers, inspectors, and technical staff. Support business development efforts through client relationship management and identification of additional consulting opportunities. Maintain current knowledge of Florida Building Code requirements, Milestone Inspection legislation, structural assessment standards, and industry best practices.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license required. Minimum 8 years of structural engineering or related consulting experience. Experience performing structural plan reviews and engineering evaluations.

Strong understanding of structural systems, building materials, and structural assessment methodologies. Experience with existing building evaluations, rehabilitation projects, or structural condition assessments. Working knowledge of Florida Building Code requirements and local jurisdictional review processes. Knowledge of Threshold Inspections, Special Inspections, and quality assurance programs.

Strong communication, project management, and client relationship skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and client priorities simultaneously.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Significant experience performing Milestone Inspections and 40-Year Recertification engineering evaluations. Experience with Broward County and Miami-Dade County structural review requirements. Experience serving as Engineer of Record for repairs or rehabilitation projects resulting from recertification evaluations. Threshold Inspection experience.

Structural forensic engineering experience involving condition assessments, structural failures, and property damage investigations. Building Envelope consulting experience. Familiarity with ASTM, ACI, ICC, and Florida Building Code standards. Existing relationships with South Florida property owners, condominium associations, municipalities, architects, contractors, or developers.
