Job description
The Norwich Free Academy is seeking a School Nurse/LPN. The School Nurse / Licensed Practical Nurse supports Norwich Free Academy (NFA) by delivering student health care, supporting disease prevention, and promoting a safe and healthy school environment under the direction of a Registered Nurse. This position advocates for students' health needs and works collaboratively with families, school personnel, and health care providers to address health concerns, support individual health care plans, and help students participate in their education.
This is a full-time, 10 month position following the academic calendar. Hourly range: $33.00 - $35.00 Performance Responsibilities: Under the direction of the RN, respond to student illnesses, injuries, emergencies, chronic health concerns, and crisis situations using Medical Center policies, procedures, and protocols.
Assist the RN in addressing student health concerns related to nutrition, personal hygiene, mental health, substance use, physical neglect or abuse, sexual abuse, adolescent pregnancy, and sexually transmitted illnesses. Administer medications during the school day under RN direction and in accordance with applicable requirements, authorized medication orders, and school procedures.
Collect and review student health information, including immunizations, medication orders, health histories, physical examination findings, and required vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening information. Record health information in SNAP, applicable student databases, and cumulative health records. Review health information for registering students and assist with the medical clearance process before enrollment under RN direction and established procedures.
Provide input into the development and implementation of Individual Health Care Plans for identified students. Assist the RN with identifying health care concerns, planning interventions, evaluating student responses, and documenting care. Serve as a liaison with parents, health care providers, school personnel, the school nursing supervisor, administration, and the medical advisor.
Consult with community health care providers to support student health needs. Provide individualized health education to students and families. Prepare and maintain health office rooms, monitor inventory, and request supplies as appropriate. Promote a safe and healthy school environment and report health and safety concerns to administration and the Medical Center Supervisor.
Maintain confidential student health records and periodically update lists of students with health concerns, sharing pertinent information with appropriate staff. Review physical assessment documentation and health histories required for sports participation and physical education. Maintain sports and physical education restriction lists and communicate pertinent medical information to physical education teachers and coaches.
Participate in Medical Center staff meetings and ongoing educational and in-service programs. Maintain knowledge of school operations and applicable education and health requirements, and evaluate nursing practice in relation to relevant policies and professional standards. Perform other related duties as assigned. Professional Practices and Expectations: Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, families, staff, and health care providers.
Clear and compassionate communication, both oral and written. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, including student care, documentation, and follow-up, with professionalism and attention to detail. Sound judgment, integrity, and respect for confidentiality. Proficiency with electronic nursing records and school communication systems.
Commitment to ongoing professional development and collaborative practice under RN direction. Working Conditions: Work is performed in the NFA Medical Center and school environment. Regular use of phone, email, computers, and electronic nursing record systems.
Responsibilities include

Qualifications
Completion of a practical nursing education program and successful passage of the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Connecticut. At least one year of nursing experience. Current CPR and AED certification. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to maintain accurate health records and protect confidential student information. Proficiency with electronic nursing records, word processing, spreadsheets, and database programs. Ability to read, interpret, and apply professional materials, equipment instructions, and policies, procedures, and protocols. Ability to apply mathematical skills, collect and interpret information, identify problems, and exercise sound judgment.
