Job description

Job Description Fugro’s aerial mapping services help clients understand and manage natural and built environments by transforming LiDAR, imagery, and geospatial data into accurate mapping products and actionable insights. The Lidar Analyst will be responsible for supporting LiDAR data processing and vector data editing tasks to ensure high-quality mapping deliverables.

This role focuses on reviewing and refining LiDAR point classifications and editing vector GIS data (especially hydrographic features like rivers, lakes, and watershed boundaries) to meet project specifications. The technician works under the guidance of senior analysts, using geospatial software tools (e.g., Terra. Solid, LP360, ArcGIS Pro, Global Mapper) to correct automated classification errors and to create or edit vector datasets.

A strong foundational understanding of LiDAR data, classification techniques, and GIS workflows – combined with keen attention to detail – is required to perform quality control and contribute to accurate, reliable geospatial products.

Job Responsibilities

Lead by example and place Quality, Health & Safety, Security, and the protection of the Environment as core values while never intentionally placing employees, our processes, customers, or the communities in which we live and work at risk. Review automatically classified LiDAR point cloud data and manually reclassify points where needed.

Identify misclassified points (for example, ground points flagged as vegetation or vice versa, and noise points that were not removed) and correct their classifications using LiDAR processing software (such as Micro. Station with Terra. Solid or LP360). Ensure the point cloud meets specification – with ground, vegetation, building, and other classes properly distinguished – to support the creation of accurate terrain models and analyses.

Assist in the creation and maintenance of vector GIS layers derived from LiDAR and imagery data, with an emphasis on hydrographic features. Use ArcGIS Pro to digitize, edit, and QC features like rivers, streams, lakes, and watershed boundaries. Ensure that hydrographic breaklines and watershed polygons are accurately drawn and properly integrated with elevation data (e.

g., LiDAR-derived terrain models) so that final topographic maps and flood models are correct. Perform topology checks and attribute updates on these vector datasets to uphold data integrity and consistency. Carry out routine QA/QC checks on both LiDAR and vector data. This includes validating that LiDAR point classifications conform to project standards (e.

g., no unclassified or incorrectly classified points in deliverables) and that all required vector features are present and correctly delineated. Flag anomalies such as classification errors or misalignments between vector features and point cloud data. Work with senior team members to resolve issues – for instance, applying additional automated classification routines or manual corrections – and verify that updates have improved the data quality.

Follow established processing workflows and project guidelines to complete tasks efficiently and consistently. Maintain organized records of changes made to datasets (e.g., keeping logs of classification adjustments or vector edits). Communicate progress and any issues encountered to the project lead or supervisor in a timely manner, seeking guidance when faced with complex problems.

Contribute to team meetings or debriefs by providing insights from your QA findings – for example, highlighting common areas where automatic classification struggled – to help improve overall process efficiency or training needs. Other duties as assigned. Job Requirements Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions.

A high school diploma or equivalent required. Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Remote Sensing, or a related field preferred. Relevant coursework or project experience in LiDAR data processing or GIS data editing is highly desirable. Foundational understanding of LiDAR technology and point cloud data structure (e.

g., LAS format, elevation models) and basic familiarity with industry classification standards (such as ASPRS classes for ground, vegetation, buildings, etc.) Have 1 or more year of Hands-on experience with LiDAR processing software such as Terra. Solid. (Terra. Scan/Terra. Modeler on Micro. Station), LP360, or Global Mapper is required.

Demonstrated ability to use Esri ArcGIS Pro for vector editing and analysis is essential (including skills in creating/editing features, applying topology rules, and performing spatial QC). Excellent observational skills to catch small errors in large geospatial datasets. Proven ability to carefully review point clouds and GIS layers to identify misclassifications, missing features, or inconsistencies.

Quality-oriented mindset with a commitment to delivering data that meets established accuracy standards and project requirements. Basic analytical and problem-solving abilities to investigate data issues (for example, determining why a group of points was misclassified or diagnosing a topology error in a vector layer) and apply appropriate fixes.

Should be comfortable learning and adopting new tools or techniques as needed – for instance, tweaking classification parameters or using ArcGIS extensions – in order to improve results.
