About the Role

The Senior Design Technician develops accurate parametric and non-parametric 3D models, detailed product drawings, drawing revisions, bills of material, and related technical documentation required to manufacture products in accordance with customer specifications, performance requirements, quality standards, and project schedules.

Working from engineering concepts and design direction, this role exercises substantial independent judgment in detailing components, assemblies, and subsystems. The Senior Design Technician also provides technical support throughout the sales, design, manufacturing, assembly, and testing processes while mentoring and guiding other design technicians.

Key Responsibilities

3D Modeling and Design Development: Create accurate 3D models, layouts, detailed drawings, bills of material, and manufacturing documentation in accordance with design requirements and production schedules. Engineering Concept Development: Convert engineering concepts, calculations, sketches, and specifications into complete, manufacturable designs for components, assemblies, and subsystems.

Product Lifecycle Management: Prepare parametric and non-parametric models and maintain design data within the approved product lifecycle management (PLM) environment. Product Development Support: Produce models, layouts, sketches, and technical documentation to evaluate product functionality, feasibility, fit, and manufacturability.

Sales and Contract Support: Generate outline drawings and technical information to support sales activities and contract negotiations within required response times. Post-Order Technical Support: Assist contract administration by addressing customer questions, technical clarifications, and documentation requests following order placement.

Design Review and Quality: Review models, layouts, drawings, and bills of material for accuracy, completeness, dimensional consistency, and compliance with applicable standards and design practices. Drawing Revisions and Configuration Control: Prepare, process, and document drawing changes and revision notices while maintaining accurate configuration control.

Cross-Functional Technical Support: Provide technical guidance to designers, design technicians, manufacturing personnel, suppliers, and other company facilities regarding design intent, materials, substitutions, and manufacturing requirements. Manufacturing and Testing Support: Support shop assembly and product testing by investigating design-related questions or issues and coordinating timely resolution with engineering.

Engineering Collaboration: Assist engineers with sketches, layouts, calculations, tolerance evaluations, and technical problem-solving as needed. Training and Mentorship: Mentor and train design technicians and other support personnel in drafting practices, design tools, documentation standards, and departmental procedures.

Continuous Improvement: Participate in design reviews and recommend improvements to safety, quality, manufacturability, cost, and schedule performance.
