Job description
Boston Metal is redefining global metals production with its patented Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology, an electrified platform that transforms how metals are made. Designed to operate across a wide range of metal oxides, MOE enables production from diverse feedstocks, creating a scalable and cost-effective pathway to unlock new economic opportunities, support industrial onshoring and strengthen the secure supply of critical metals needed for advanced technologies, manufacturing and AI.
Backed by visionary investors, Boston Metal is headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts and has a wholly owned subsidiary in Brazil. Boston Metal is seeking a Process Engineer to support the industrial deployment of our Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) platform to revolutionize the production of metals. From the identification of a new feedstock through the deployment of a metallurgical plant, the Process Engineering Team serves as the process architect, bridging technology development and business objectives to deliver industrially robust, economically optimized solutions.
In this role, your primary focus will be to develop predictive models that guide operational strategy and process control, improving process robustness, throughput, resource efficiency, and other key performance indicators. Your modeling scope will range from steady-state to dynamic models, from individual unit operations to integrated plant-wide models, and from heat and mass balances to optimization and operations research.
Success in this role requires a strong hands-on approach beyond modeling, including direct engagement with plant operations and experimental programs to understand process realities and gaps, to ensure your engineering models remain grounded and your recommendations actionable. This is a role with significant room for growth reporting to the Manager of Process Engineering.
Seniority level is commensurate with the candidate’s background and experience. You will be working in a small team environment where teamwork and good relationships with other team members is critical. We operate pilot plants and labs and the employee has potential for exposure to hazardous chemicals and/or hazardous waste, extremely high temperatures, occasional exposure to moving equipment the risks of which are minimized through compliance with the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and established safety policies and procedures.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Requirements
B.S. with >3 years of experience, M.S., or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field Demonstrated ability to translate open-ended engineering challenges into appropriate modeling frameworks and synthesize actionable recommendations. Strong grasp of chemical engineering principles (e.
g., mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, transport phenomena…) Proficiency in Python for scientific computing, model development, data analysis, and visualization Willingness to be hands-on, self-driven to confront engineering assumptions with physical and operational reality Excellent written and verbal communication skills Willingness to travel internationally for at least 2 weeks a quarter Desired Experience and Skills:
- Practical experience with physical processes and experimental work, and the ability to independently align engineering objectives, assumptions, and methodologies with real-world process behavior and operational constraints.
- Experience with mathematical and numerical optimization
- Proficiency in one or more of MATLAB, Fact. Sage/CALPHAD, CAD, COMSOL
- Understanding of electrochemistry principles (e.g., charge transfer, current-voltage relationships)
- Experience in a cross-disciplinary engineering environment Benefits We are people first with a comprehensive benefits package that can be customized to fit your needs. Our full benefits package offers health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, paid vacation, sick time and paid holidays, a health savings account with a company contribution, dependent care flexible spending account, paid parental and bonding leave, and a 401k with company matching provision.
