Reading Recovery Teacher Lewiston Public Schools Job Title Reading Recovery Teacher Department Literacy Intervention Reports To Building Principal Approved By J. Langlais, Superintendent Effective Date 10/2/2026 Status Full-time, salaried Salary Range $45,518.26 � $85,857.57 annually Position Summary The Reading Recovery Teacher provides early literacy intervention for at-risk students through Reading Recovery, small-group instruction, and literacy lessons.
The teacher assesses students and plans instruction according to all requirements of the Reading Recovery model, and works collaboratively with fellow teachers to identify and address student needs. Teachers who are not yet trained in Reading Recovery complete training during their first school year. Training involves a full academic year of coursework while teaching individual students in a Reading Recovery setting.
Essential Requirement: Availability The employee must be available and able to work five (5) days per week, Monday through Friday, according to the Lewiston Public Schools schedule. This is an essential function of the position, not a preference. The Reading Recovery model depends on daily, uninterrupted lessons for each student, and the teacher provides at least two hours of intervention every day.
Regular, predictable attendance is therefore required, along with the year-long training and ongoing professional development sessions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned. Intervention Meet all standards and guidelines of the Reading Recovery model. Provide intervention to identified students for at least two hours every day. Work effectively with at-risk students through Reading Recovery lessons, small-group instruction, and literacy lessons. Advocate for and help deliver appropriate literacy intervention.
Assessment and records Assess, record, and monitor student progress. Keep complete records on each student served as the basis for instruction. Consult with classroom teachers to check whether assessment results match each student's performance in the classroom. Collaboration and communication Collaborate with other school staff to address student and program needs.
Communicate regularly throughout the year with the Reading Recovery Teacher Leader, parents, classroom teachers, and other school staff. Professional learning and school community Participate in ongoing, year-long professional development, including Reading Recovery training if not already trained. Participate in school activities and programs that foster positive growth for all children.
Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises students in classroom and school settings. No supervisory responsibility for staff.
Qualifications

Education, certification, and experience Bachelor's degree Valid Maine teaching certificate At least three years of teaching experience in the primary grades Reading Recovery training preferred; untrained candidates must complete the year-long training Interest in working with struggling readers and writers Completed criminal history record check (fingerprinting), as required by Maine law Available and able to work 5 days per week per the Lewiston Public Schools schedule Language skills Communicate clearly and effectively.
Complete graduate-level assignments, including written work and reading of professional literature. Mathematical and data skills Present and analyze school data. Use technology for instruction, data analysis, and presentations. Reasoning ability Define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Other skills and abilities Good communication and leadership skills. Operate equipment such as copiers and computers. Supervise students responsibly, and understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Build effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Perform duties in line with all district requirements and School Committee policies.
Compensation
and Benefits The salary range for this position is $45,518.26 to $85,857.57 annually, with placement on the teacher salary schedule based on education and experience.
