Role Profile JOB DETAILS Position Title Insulator/ Steam Tracer Location Houston, TX Functionally Reports into Superintendent FLSA Status Non-exempt JOB OBJECTIVE The HVAC Insulator installs, repairs and maintains thermal and acoustic insulation on HVAC ductwork, piping and mechanical equipment at industrial job sites, including refineries, petrochemical plants and manufacturing facilities.

The role works from drawings and specifications under the direction of the Insulation Foreman, and follows Norrell Construction safety and quality standards on every task.

Essential duties and responsibilities

Read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, insulation specifications and work packages to determine material type, thickness and installation method. Measure, cut, fit and install insulation materials such as fiberglass, mineral wool, calcium silicate, cellular glass, elastomeric foam and duct wrap/liner on HVAC ductwork, chilled and hot water piping, valves, fittings and equipment.

Install vapor barriers, jacketing (aluminum, stainless steel, PVC), mastics, sealants, bands and fasteners to specification. Fabricate removable insulation covers, metal jacketing, end caps and fitting covers using hand and power tools. Remove and replace damaged or deteriorated insulation during maintenance, turnaround and repair work.

Inspect completed work for gaps, voids and proper sealing; correct deficiencies and support QA/QC inspections. Work safely from ladders, scaffolding and aerial lifts, and in confined spaces when permitted and trained. Load, unload, stage and protect materials; keep the work area clean and organized. Complete job safety analyses (JSAs), permits and daily paperwork as required by the site.

Coordinate with pipefitters, sheet metal workers and other crafts to keep work sequenced and on schedule. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required 2+ years of commercial or industrial insulation experience, with HVAC duct and piping systems. Working knowledge of insulation materials, jacketing systems and installation methods. Able to read blueprints, isometrics and specifications and take accurate measurements. Proficient with insulator hand and power tools (knives, snips, rivet guns, banding tools, crimpers, saws).

Able to pass pre-employment drug screen, background check and site-specific safety orientation. Able to obtain and keep a TWIC card for access to port and secured industrial facilities. Reliable transportation to job sites. Preferred 4+ years of industrial insulation experience in refineries, chemical plants or power generation.

Completed insulator apprenticeship or NCCER Insulating craft credentials. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification. Basic Plus (or other site-required safety council) certification. Experience with removable blankets, cold-service systems and metal jacketing fabrication. Experience on plant turnarounds and shutdowns. Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Physical requirements and working conditions The work is physically demanding and takes place outdoors and inside operating industrial facilities. Reasonable accommodations may be made so that individuals with disabilities can perform the essential functions. Lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 lbs regularly. Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach and climb for extended periods.

Work at heights on ladders, scaffolding and aerial lifts, using fall protection. Work in tight spaces, confined spaces and around operating equipment. Work in Gulf Coast heat and humidity, cold, rain, noise, dust and fibers. Wear required PPE at all times, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, FRC and a respirator when required (must pass a respirator fit test and medical clearance).

Work overtime, extended shifts, nights and weekends during turnarounds and outages. Safety, benefits and EEO Safety Safety is a condition of employment at Norrell Construction.
