Product Engineer
Job description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities Own product yield for InP edge-emitting lasers and photodiodes, including monitoring performance, identifying yield detractors, and driving measurable yield improvement. Monitor electrical and optical device trends across wafers, lots, and manufacturing stages to identify process or epitaxial excursions, performance shifts, and emerging quality concerns.
Analyze wafer-level and die-level test data using yield summaries, failure paretos, wafer maps, and statistical comparisons to prioritize improvement opportunities. Work closely with epitaxy, process engineering, device design, test, manufacturing, quality, and reliability teams to investigate failures and establish root cause.
Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions with cross-functional teams. Verify effectiveness through device performance, yield improvement, and sustained process stability. Plan and evaluate experiments to understand relationships between epitaxial properties, fabrication processes, and device performance.
Support product characterization, specification reviews, and evaluation of process changes to maintain product performance and manufacturability. Communicate yield trends, investigation findings, corrective actions, and improvement progress through clear technical reports and regular product reviews.
Education
& Experience Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in semiconductor product engineering, device engineering, process engineering, or a related technical role. BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Optical Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent degree. Experience analyzing semiconductor device performance, investigating manufacturing yield loss, and applying structured root cause analysis.
Experience with III-V semiconductor devices, particularly InP lasers or photodiodes, is preferred. Skills Strong understanding of semiconductor laser fundamentals, including threshold current, optical gain and loss, slope efficiency, spectral behavior, and temperature-dependent performance. Strong root cause analysis and problem-solving skills, with the ability to connect device behavior to potential epitaxial, fabrication, or test-related causes.
Working knowledge of statistical analysis, process control, and design of experiments. Ability to take ownership of yield issues, prioritize investigations, and follow corrective actions through implementation and verification. Strong interpersonal, teaming, and technical communication skills. Work effectively with other members of Coherent Corp.
across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and reliability functions to resolve technical issues and improve product yield. Data processing, scripting, and automation skills are a significant plus, particularly experience with JMP/JSL, SQL, Python, or similar tools for analyzing large manufacturing datasets. Working Conditions Work in office and semiconductor manufacturing environments.
Physical Requirements Ability to perform computer-based data analysis, prepare technical documentation, and participate in technical discussions. Ability to access laboratory and manufacturing areas, including occasional standing and walking, as required by the role. Safety Requirements All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp.
Corporate EHS standards. Quality and Environmental Responsibilities Depending on location, this position may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of the ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and/or other applicable standards that may apply to the relevant roles and responsibilities within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
