Job description

Apprentice (I–IV)

  • Plumbing Position Overview As an Apprentice I–IV – Plumbing at a Modigent operating company, you will participate in a structured 4-year registered apprenticeship program (approximately 8,000 hours of on-the-job training plus related technical instruction). You will progressively develop skills in commercial plumbing systems—including domestic water, sanitary/storm drainage, process piping, medical gas, high-purity systems, fixtures, and backflow prevention—while working under the direct supervision of experienced journeymen and foremen. Progression through Levels I–IV is based on accumulated hours, demonstrated competencies, completion of required coursework and labs, performance evaluations, and successful advancement reviews.

Duties and Responsibilities

Apprentice I (Entry-Level / Probationary – Typically 0–2,000 hours) Assist journeymen with material handling, tool organization, job site cleanup, and preparation of plumbing components. Learn and apply fundamental safety practices, tool usage, and PPE requirements. Perform simple pipe cutting, measuring, threading, grooving, and basic fitting under close supervision.

Observe and support basic assembly, installation, and support/hanger placement. Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, simulation training, labs, and introductory classroom instruction. Apprentice II (Developing Skills – Typically 2,000–4,000 hours) Perform intermediate tasks with increasing independence, including accurate pipe measurement, cutting, beveling, fitting, and basic joining methods (threading, grooving, soldering, pressing).

Assist in layout, rigging, and installation of piping systems, supports, valves, fixtures, and backflow devices. Support pressure testing, leak detection, flushing, disinfection, and basic system preparation under supervision. Read and interpret basic blueprints, isometrics, and specifications; document work progress.

Contribute to prefabrication activities and begin applying relevant codes with guidance. Apprentice III (Advanced Skills – Typically 4,000–6,000 hours) Independently handle more complex plumbing installations, including advanced fitting, alignment, system integration, and fixture rough-in/set. Perform and document testing procedures (hydrostatic, pneumatic), flushing, disinfection, backflow testing, and startup support.

Troubleshoot basic system issues and implement corrective actions under supervision. Lead small crew segments or tasks; mentor lower-level apprentices as directed. Interpret complex drawings and specifications; assist with material takeoffs and change order documentation. Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Apprentice IV (Pre-Journeyman – Typically 6,000–8,000 hours) Execute full-scope plumbing tasks with minimal supervision, including fabrication, installation, modification, repair, and commissioning of complex systems. Lead installation sequences, coordinate with other trades, and oversee quality control for assigned scope.

Perform advanced troubleshooting, system verification, balancing, and performance testing. Support project close-out, including as-builts, O&M documentation, warranty prep, and testing records. Demonstrate leadership by training lower-level apprentices and contributing to safety and process improvements. Prepare for journeyman certification exams and final apprenticeship completion requirements.

Supervisory Responsibilities None at entry levels. Higher levels (III–IV) may provide guidance and mentoring to lower-level apprentices as directed. Requirements/Qualifications Experience: No prior plumbing experience required for Level I; progressive advancement based on hours and demonstrated competency.

Education

High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required. Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen, background check, and physical exam. Commitment to completing the full 4-year registered apprenticeship program. Physical Demands: Ability to lift/carry up to 50+ pounds; stand, walk, climb ladders/scaffolding, bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and work in confined spaces or at heights for extended periods.
