Special Education Clinician Lewiston Public Schools Job Title Special Education Clinician Department Special Education Reports To Director of Special Education / Building Principal Approved By J. Langlais, Superintendent Effective Date 1/2/2026 Status Full-time, salaried Salary Range $45,518.26 - $85,857.57 annually Position Summary The Special Education Clinician plays an integral role in the school's social-emotional supports, contributing to assessment, intervention, family engagement, consultation, collaboration, and leadership at every tier of intervention.

The clinician works with students, families, staff, and community partners to remove barriers to learning and improve students' social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes. Essential Requirement: Availability The employee must be available and able to work five (5) days per week, Monday through Friday, according to the Lewiston Public Schools schedule.

This is an essential function of the position, not a preference. Students receiving counseling and crisis support depend on a consistent, trusted clinician. Regular, predictable attendance is therefore required, along with scheduled IEP meetings, supervision, and professional development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ethics and compliance Follow the ethics and values of the social work or counseling profession, using its code of ethics to guide decisions, and demonstrate the core values of service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence.

Know and comply with all local, state, and federal requirements on informed consent, privacy and confidentiality, access to records, and access to education and special education, including FERPA and mandated reporting. Assessment Assess individuals, families, and systems to improve students' social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes.

Use data and assessment to guide services, and evaluate their own practice to improve and expand services. Intervention across all tiers Use evidence-informed practices to create positive educational experiences, including: Tier 1: Schoolwide prevention programs that teach positive behavior, promote social-emotional development, and support a school climate conducive to learning.

Tier 2: Small-group and short-term interventions that improve early academic and social-emotional engagement and reduce problem behavior. Tier 3: Individual and long-term intervention for students with serious academic, behavioral, or social-emotional needs that have not responded to Tier 1 or Tier 2 supports. Provide counseling and related services as specified in students' IEPs, and take part in IEP meetings.

Keep accurate data and records for planning, carrying out, and evaluating services. Leadership, consultation, and family engagement Lead and consult to help others understand home, school, and community factors that affect students' education. Train and engage parents, school staff, other professionals, and community members to remove barriers to learning.

Provide leadership and collaboration in school-based and school-linked programs that promote student well-being and academic success. Share knowledge of behavioral interventions and strategies with staff and families. Professional growth Take part in individual and group supervision and professional development, and contribute to the professional learning community.

Supervisory Responsibilities Provides clinical supervision to Behavioral Health Professionals (BHPs) when assigned to a specialized program, such as a self-contained or day treatment program.

Qualifications

Education

Master's degree from a graduate school of social work or a counseling program Certificates, licenses, and registrations One of the following Maine licenses: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Master Social Worker � Conditional Clinical (LMSW-cc), Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), or Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor � Conditional (LCPC-c) Certification in the district's crisis intervention program, such as TCIS Completed criminal history record check (fingerprinting), as required by Maine law Available and able to work 5 days per week per the Lewiston Public Schools schedule Language skills Read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations.

Write clinical reports, assessments, correspondence, and procedures. Present information effectively and respond to questions from students, families, staff, and community partners. Reasoning ability Solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables where only limited standardization exists. Interpret instructions given in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Use sound clinical judgment, including in crisis situations. Other skills and abilities Existing knowledge of behavioral interventions and strategies, and the ability to share it with staff and families. Knowledge of MTSS and trauma-informed practices. Ability to build trusting relationships with students, families, and colleagues across cultures.

Perform duties in line with all district requirements and School Committee policies.

Compensation

and Benefits The salary range for this position is $45,518.26 - $85,857.57 annually, with placement based on education and experience. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform them. Regularly stand, talk, and hear; frequently walk. Sit for extended periods during counseling sessions, meetings, and documentation. Move quickly to respond to students in crisis anywhere in the building. Occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds, such as school supplies and books.

Work takes place in counseling offices, classrooms, and meeting rooms. The noise level is usually moderate to loud.

The clinician regularly works with students in crisis and families under stress, and may be exposed to aggressive or unsafe behavior, particularly in specialized programs.
