Position Summary

The Structural Designer III performs complex structural layout and advanced 2D design for high-voltage substation projects under minimal supervision. This senior-level role takes full ownership of large-scale, high-complexity 2D design packages, establishing drawing workflows and ensuring strict compliance with client and company CAD standards.

The Structural Designer III acts as a primary technical checker for design deliverables, interfaces closely with lead designers and engineers to resolve advanced layout challenges, and heavily mentors junior design and drafting staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

Independently manage, execute, and finalize comprehensive construction drawing packages for major, high-voltage substation projects with zero supervision. Develop complex 2D structural layouts, advanced foundation plans, intricate steel framing elevations, and detailed fabrication drawing sets. Translate highly complex engineering concepts, geotechnical data, and major vendor equipment submittals into precise, production-ready 2D CAD deliverables.

Act as a lead technical checker for the design team, performing rigorous quality control (QA/QC) reviews on 2D drawing packages for accuracy, clarity, and constructability. Review and verify equipment dimensions and anchor bolt patterns to ensure flawless spatial alignment and clearance compliance in a 2D environment.

Coordinate advanced cross-discipline alignments to proactively identify and resolve critical layout conflicts with electrical, civil, and physical design teams. Compile, review, and approve final bills of materials (BOMs), material take-offs, and drawing indexes for major project submittals. Maintain, update, and enforce company and client drafting and design standards, cell/block libraries, and template conventions.

Provide strong technical leadership, train staff, and delegate assignments to Designer I, Designer II, and drafting team members to foster their professional growth. Perform other job-related duties as requested by management.

Qualifications

Associate degree in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), or equivalent technical experience is required. Four (4) to seven (7)+ years of 2D drafting and design experience is required; extensive experience in high-voltage substation is required. Expert-level understanding of structural steel shapes, concrete foundation design principles, and heavy industrial construction drawing views.

Proven track record of leading the organization, management, and flawless delivery of large[1]scale structural drawing sets. Technical Skills Expert-level proficiency and advanced working competency in 2D CAD platforms such as AutoCAD or Micro. Station is required. Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Exceptional spatial reasoning skills and total autonomy for full drawing package creation and multi-discipline coordination. Strong leadership, communication, time-management, and teamwork skills. Proven desire and ability to mentor junior staff and drive technical excellence within a 2D design department. Ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously and meet strict project deadlines in a fast-paced EPC environment.
