GRIFFITH PUBLIC SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title Boys Head Varsity Wrestling Coach Reports To Athletic Director and Building Principal Position Purpose The Head Varsity Wrestling Coach is responsible for planning, organizing, and administering all aspects of the boys wrestling program. The coach shall provide leadership that promotes academic achievement, sportsmanship, character development, and athletic excellence while ensuring compliance with district, conference, and IHSAA rules and regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Leadership Provide overall leadership and direction for the boys wrestling program. Develop and communicate a clear vision and philosophy for the wrestling program. Establish high expectations for student-athletes regarding academics, behavior, sportsmanship, attendance, and athletic performance. Promote a positive team culture that emphasizes integrity, respect, accountability, and teamwork.
Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes. Coaching Responsibilities Plan and conduct practices that effectively develop wrestling skills, conditioning, strategy, and sportsmanship. Prepare athletes for interscholastic competition through instruction and skill development. Develop practice schedules and seasonal training plans.
Supervise student-athletes during practices, contests, travel, and team activities. Promote and maintain a safe environment for all participants. Ensure appropriate supervision of assistant coaches, volunteers, and student managers. Student Development Encourage academic achievement and monitor student-athlete eligibility.
Foster leadership, responsibility, self-discipline, and good citizenship. Promote positive relationships among athletes, coaches, staff, parents, and community members. Assist student-athletes in setting and achieving personal and team goals. Program Administration Coordinate all aspects of the wrestling season, including scheduling, equipment, transportation requests, and event preparation.
Maintain accurate inventory and accountability of equipment and uniforms. Submit required reports, rosters, schedules, and documentation in a timely manner. Assist with budget planning and responsible use of program resources. Work collaboratively with the Athletic Director regarding program needs and operations. Staff Supervision and Collaboration Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches within district guidelines.
Conduct regular meetings with coaching staff to ensure consistency throughout the program. Collaborate with middle school coaches to promote program continuity and athlete development. Support multi-sport participation when appropriate and encourage positive relationships with other athletic programs. Communication and Community Relations Maintain effective communication with student-athletes, parents, school personnel, and community members.
Address concerns professionally and in accordance with district procedures. Promote the wrestling program through positive community engagement and sportsmanship. Represent Griffith Public Schools in a professional manner at all times. Compliance and Safety Comply with all Griffith Public Schools policies and procedures.
Adhere to all applicable IHSAA, conference, and state regulations. Ensure all athletes meet eligibility requirements. Complete required certifications and training, including concussion awareness, sudden cardiac arrest, heat illness prevention, and other district-required training. Immediately report injuries, accidents, and concerns according to district procedures.
Additional Duties Attend athletic department meetings and professional development opportunities. Assist with athletic department events and initiatives as requested. Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal.
Qualifications
Required High school diploma required; bachelor's degree preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of wrestling techniques, rules, and program management. Prior coaching experience preferred. Ability to effectively supervise and motivate student-athletes. Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills. Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours during the athletic season.
Certifications Current completion of all IHSAA-required coaching certifications. CPR, AED, and First Aid certification or ability to obtain upon hire. Successful completion of all district-required background checks and trainings. Physical Requirements Ability to demonstrate wrestling techniques and conditioning activities.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift equipment as necessary. Ability to supervise athletes in practice and competition settings for extended periods. Terms of Employment Supplemental coaching position.
Compensation
determined by the approved extracurricular salary schedule. Employment contingent upon appointment by the Board of School Trustees. Evaluation Performance will be evaluated annually by the Athletic Director and/or Building Principal in accordance with district procedures.
