Position Summary:
The Library Services and Outreach Assistant focuses on fulfilling collection requests and handling library materials efficiently. This role is physical, requiring frequent movement, lifting, and organizing materials. While excellent guest service remains essential, this position is primarily operational, ensuring materials are processed, shelved, and delivered accurately and in a timely manner. The Library Services and Outreach Assistant participates as needed in Library and outreach events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Demonstrates Welcoming Behaviors and C.C.P.L. Internal Service Standards to encourage approachability and effective interactions with vendors, guests, and staff at all levels of the organization.

Retrieves, processes, and fulfills collection requests, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.

Checks library materials in and out, processes holds, and manages item transit between branches.

Sorts, shelves, and organizes materials following the Dewey Decimal Classification system.

Assists guests with locating materials and using library resources, and providing reading recommendations (Reader's Advisory).

Monitors collection condition and assists with basic upkeep and donation processing.

Performs opening and closing procedures, including financial reconciliation, material preparation, and maintaining branch appearance.

Performs general clerical duties as assigned.

Assists in training new staff on circulation and collection-related duties.

Tracks and compiles relevant statistical data as assigned.

Ensures facility safety and reports any issues to the Manager or Facilities Department.

Participates in professional development opportunities as required.

Regular and predictable physical attendance.
Additional Examples of Work Performed:

Participates in pop-up libraries and other outreach events as needed.

Assists with system-wide decision making by serving on committees. Assists in setting short range goals, objectives, and priorities.

Assists with the training of new staff members in library policies and procedures. May serve as a mentor for new staff.

Assists with supervision of volunteer activities.
Qualifications and Required Abilities:
-
High school diploma. Two years of relevant experience preferred.
-
Ability to work efficiently in a physically active role, including lifting up to 50 pounds and maneuvering book carts up to 200 pounds.

Ability to establish and maintain an excellent working relationship with library staff in all departments, library guests, with volunteers, and within workgroups, respectful of diversity and all ages.

Ability to demonstrate courtesy and tact and to maintain composure, demonstrate diplomacy and maintain confidentiality while addressing issues with the public and staff, including complaint resolution.

Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills in a variety of formats. Ability to use available communication tools to keep informed of policy and procedural changes and to communicate with manager on a daily basis.

Knowledge to operate office equipment such as printers, telephones, and copiers (including faxing and scanning, etc.), and to perform minor maintenance and troubleshooting.

Knowledge of both current and classic library materials for all ages.

Strong organizational and attention-to-detail skills for managing high volumes of materials.

Analytical ability to understand and solve typical reference questions by supplying information well-suited to the library guest. Judgment to refer more difficult questions to appropriate staff members as needed.

Ability to demonstrate independent judgment, organizational skills, and detail orientation. Ability to perform duties without direct supervision, determine appropriate time commitments for the task at hand, handle multiple priorities, and concentrate on a task despite frequent interruptions.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the Library's circulation system, and technology such as the Library's app, e-material platforms, and databases. Ability to learn new skills as they develop or are implemented.

Ability to maintain a working knowledge of library services, material, and programs and to promote to all ages.

Ability to perform periodic self-evaluation, and sets long and short-range goals and priorities for self.

Is self-motivated, and able to demonstrate effective problem-solving and decision-making techniques.

Strong guest service skills to assist with library-related inquiries.

Ability to interpret Library policy and procedures for guests.

Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.

Must have reliable transportation for travel to and from other branches and departments. W orks at other branches as necessary.
Physical Demands:
-
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting. Must have agility and strength necessary to effectively and safely reach up or down, stoop, stretch, and use step stools and ladders to retrieve and shelve materials, conduct programs, carry equipment, straighten facility, rearrange furniture under 50 pounds, shovel snow, etc.

Ability to handle repetitive motions related to material handling.

Pay Grade 3, non-exempt
CBU Status: Bargaining Unit
24 hours/week

Monday: 10:00 AM-8:00 PM

Tuesday: 12:00 PM-8:00 PM

Wednesday-Thursday: 10:00 AM-6:00 PM
