Weld County School District Re-1, Gilcrest, CO 80623 JOB DESCRIPTION Title: Transportation CDL Trainer for Passenger School Bus/Bus Routes/CDL Bus Driver FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports To: Transportation Manager Pay Range: starting at $26.80 per hr, step 40 (depending on experience) Prepared/Revised Date: September 2026 Work Year: 40 hours a week/260 days SUMMARY: The Transportation Trainer/Bus Routes/CDL Bus Driver is responsible for coordinating, training, and supporting the district's transportation operations.
This position serves as the district's lead trainer for CDL and small bus drivers, manages and updates student bus routes, and provides driving coverage for daily routes, shuttles, or special events as needed. The role ensures compliance with Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requirements, promotes safe and efficient transportation for students, and supports the overall mission of the district.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Job Tasks Descriptions Frequency % of time Train, mentor, and evaluate new and current bus drivers in CDL and small vehicle operation. Safely operate school buses on assigned routes, activity trips, or shuttles as needed. Monitor compliance with safety procedures and state regulations. Respond to transportation-related emergencies or coverage needs.
D 50% Develop and adjust bus routes and schedule with the Transportation Manager in routing software, ensuring efficiency and equity across the district. Conduct ride-alongs, spot checks, and safety inspections with drivers. Communicate with schools, parents, and staff about transportation issues. W 15% Facilitate safety meetings and driver in-service training.
Track and document driver performance, training hours, and compliance records. Review vehicle inspections and coordinate with maintenance staff. M 10% Conduct route efficiency reviews and recommend adjustments based on enrollment or ridership trends. Provide district-wide transportation reports to administration. Update and implement training modules in line with CDE/CDOT regulations.
Q 10% Coordinate annual CDL recertification training and testing for CDL and small vehicle drivers. Oversee start-of-year route planning and student assignments. Support recruitment and onboarding of new drivers with the Transportation Manager A 10% 8. Perform other duties as assigned. M 5% TOTAL= 100% EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent required Minimum of three (3) years' experience in school transportation, commercial driving, or related field. Prior experience as a certified trainer or mentor in CDL bus driver instruction preferred. Experience with bus routing software and transportation logistics strongly preferred. TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of Colorado Department of Education transportation regulations. Strong understanding of CDL driving requirements, defensive driving, and student safety procedures. Proficiency in routing software, GPS systems, and Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to conduct effective training sessions for adult learners. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, OR CERTIFICATIONS: Valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with P (Passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. Current Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certificate. Certified Colorado Bus Driver Trainer designation (or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire). CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain). Completion of CDE annual required transportation training.
