Job description
Position Summary
The Director of Grants turns the organization's vision into funded programs. The Director understands where the organization is headed, identifies and pursues the funding opportunities that will get it there, and builds the grants function and the fiscal and contractual compliance foundation needed to manage complex federal and state awards well.
The Director also leads grant readiness for the organization's newly developed non-profit/foundation, supervises the Grant Specialist, partners with the Grants Project Manager and Grants Coordinator, approves grant invoicing, and serves as a key point of contact for funders.
Key Responsibilities
Funding strategy and growth
- Understand the organization's strategic priorities and program vision, and translate them into a funding plan that identifies what is needed, when, and from whom.
- Scan the funding landscape (federal, state, foundation, and opioid settlement or abatement sources) to anticipate opportunities, and pursue those that advance the organization's direction rather than only responding to released RFPs.
- Build and maintain a prioritized funding pipeline aligned with the organizational growth strategy, and report progress against funding goals.
- Direct the identification, evaluation, and pursuit of federal, state, foundation, and other funding opportunities.
- Review eligibility assessments and funding recommendations prepared by the grants team and make go/no-go decisions with leadership.
- Cultivate funder relationships to learn priorities early and position the organization ahead of solicitations.
- Identify gaps between the programs the organization wants to build and the funding in place, and develop strategies, including through the new foundation, to close them.
- Write and oversee complex grant proposals and applications.
- Escalate major funding decisions and significant compliance risks to the Senior Director. Federal and state funding management
- Oversee the management of complex federal and state awards, including interpretation of funding and deliverable terms, compliance, and reporting requirements.
- Lead the setup of high-risk, complex awards, including Salesforce configuration, so that routinemaintenance can transition to team members.
- Ensure program implementation remains consistent with grant contracts and fidelity requirements.
- Lead the contracting, award, and close-out steps: review the funding and deliverable sections of contracts and award terms, coordinate legal review of full contracts and subcontractor agreements, co-lead internal grant kickoff with the Grants Project Manager, and ensure close-out meets funder requirements.
- Identify compliance risks and coordinate corrective action with program and finance partners.
- Partner with the Grants Project Manager, who ensures deliverable and work plan compliance, on post-award implementation, risk monitoring, and funder reporting. Grant management oversight and financial approval
- Lead monthly fiscal monitoring of grant awards, including spending against budget, allowable costs, and spend-down, and escalate fiscal compliance concerns.
- Serve as an approver for grant invoicing, reviewing invoices built by the Grant Specialist for accuracy and consistency with contract terms before submission.
- Oversee grant management systems, source documentation, and the standard operating procedures that keep grants audit-ready.
- Partner with Finance, including a planned grants accountant, on budgets, allocations, coding, and time and effort documentation. Non-profit/foundation grant readiness
- Lead grant readiness efforts for the newly developed non-profit/foundation, including governance documents, budgets and financial documentation, and funder-facing materials.
- Advise leadership on the funding landscape and build the pipeline for the new entity Funder relationships
- Serve as a primary contact for funders and maintain positive, proactive relationships.
- Represent the organization in funder meetings, site visits, and reporting discussions. Team leadership
- Supervise, coach, and evaluate the Grant Specialist I.
- Set priorities, assign work, and manage pre-award and invoicing deadlines for the Grant Specialist, coordinating handoffs with the Grants Project Manager and Grants Coordinator.
- Develop team capacity through training and continued improvement of grants processes.
- Build redundancy across grants processes so coverage continues during absences and when high-priority awards need senior attention.
