Job description

Nearfield Instruments brings together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop revolutionary high-throughput Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) systems, enabling atom-scale resolution 3D metrology at industry-level throughput. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced metrology machines for the semiconductor industry.

What will you be doing? As a Senior Mechatronics Engineer you will lead the design and optimization of precision motion systems and control architectures that power our high-throughput SPM metrology tools. You will own projects from concept to qualification, collaborating with physicists, electronics, software and applications teams to deliver nanometer-accurate, robust and manufacturable solutions.

Design high-stiffness precision mechanisms and select actuators (piezo, voice coil, linear motors, air bearings). Develop control strategies (PID, feedforward, advanced loop-shaping) to achieve fast settling and high bandwidth. Integrate sensors (interferometers, capacitive probes, encoders) and establish calibration/traceability.

Model dynamics, run experiments (DOE), and validate performance under realistic environmental conditions. Collaborate across disciplines; document requirements, specs, and test procedures; support transfer to manufacturing. Contribute to IP and mentor junior engineers. What do we require from you? MSc/PhD in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering or Applied Physics.

8+ years experience in precision motion systems for instrumentation or semiconductor equipment. Hands-on experience with piezo/voice coil actuators, precision mechanics, and high-resolution sensing. Strong controls background and proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink or Python; familiarity with RT/embedded systems. Clear communication and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; fluent in English.

What can you expect from us? A technically challenging role where you can apply the full breadth of your mechatronics expertise. We value your work-life balance and team spirit—join our dynamic environment with opportunities for growth, innovation and collaboration. Enjoy flexible working arrangements, a supportive culture, and team activities (from table tennis to weekly runs).

Together Everyone Achieves More!
