Strings Teacher Lewiston Public Schools Job Title Strings Teacher Department Unified Arts � Music Reports To Building Principal Approved By J. Langlais, Superintendent Effective Date 10/2/2026 Status Full-time, salaried Salary Range $45,518.26 � $85,857.57 annually Position Summary The Strings Teacher instructs students in string instruments, such as violin, viola, cello, and bass, in one or two buildings.

The teacher provides engaging lessons that follow the district music curriculum, rehearses and directs string ensembles and voluntary music groups, and plans student performances. The teacher stays current with new developments in music education and instructional methods, and serves as an active member of the school staff.

Essential Requirement: Availability The employee must be available and able to work five (5) days per week, Monday through Friday, according to the Lewiston Public Schools schedule. This is an essential function of the position, not a preference. Students and ensembles in more than one building depend on a consistent teacher and rehearsal schedule.

Regular, predictable attendance is therefore required, along with scheduled concerts and performances, which may fall outside the regular school day.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Other duties may be assigned. Instruction Meet and instruct assigned classes and lessons at the designated locations and times. Follow a music curriculum aligned to state and national standards. Set clear objectives for every lesson, unit, and project, and communicate them to students. Use a variety of instructional techniques and media suited to each location's space and to the needs and abilities of individual students and groups.

Create a classroom environment that supports learning and fits students' maturity and interests. Use behavior management approaches consistent with district and building philosophy. Ensembles and performances Rehearse and direct string ensembles and voluntary music groups. Plan and direct student performances. Instruments, materials, and records Maintain the inventory of string instruments and equipment, fit students with properly sized instruments, and arrange for basic care and repairs.

Budget for and requisition supplies. Transport materials between buildings, and arrange and set up classrooms and rehearsal spaces as needed. Keep appropriate records and grades. Professional growth Stay current with developments in music education and instructional methods. Take an active role in professional learning community work.

Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises the classroom and students, including during rehearsals and performances.

Qualifications

Education, certification, and experience Bachelor's degree in music education Maine teaching certification with endorsement #614 [Music] Proficiency in teaching string instruments Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel between buildings Completed criminal history record check (fingerprinting), as required by Maine law Available and able to work 5 days per week per the Lewiston Public Schools schedule Language skills Read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations.

Write reports, correspondence, and program materials. Present information effectively and respond to questions from students, parents, colleagues, and the public. Mathematical skills Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations, including rhythm and meter. Manage a program budget and instrument inventory.

Reasoning ability Solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables where only limited standardization exists. Interpret instructions given in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Other skills and abilities Apply current research and theory to the instructional program. Plan and teach lessons based on district and school objectives and students' needs and abilities.

Build and maintain effective relationships with students, colleagues, and parents. Communicate skillfully, both orally and in writing. Perform duties in line with all district requirements and School Committee policies.

Compensation

and Benefits The salary range for this position is $45,518.26 to $85,857.57 annually, with placement on the teacher salary schedule based on education and experience. Hear conversations and music in both quiet and noisy settings, and tell where a sound is coming from, in order to tune instruments and guide ensembles. Frequently drive between buildings during the workday. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
