Job description
About the Role
The Senior Mold Maker/Tool Maker/Precision Machinist plays a critical role in the manufacturing process by designing, fabricating, and maintaining high-precision molds, tools, and dies used in production. This position requires expertise in interpreting complex blueprints and technical drawings to create components that meet exact specifications and tolerances.
The role involves working closely with engineering and production teams to ensure that tooling solutions optimize manufacturing efficiency and product quality. The Senior Mold Maker is responsible for troubleshooting and resolving tooling issues, performing routine maintenance, and implementing improvements to extend tool life and performance.
Ultimately, this position ensures that manufacturing operations run smoothly by delivering precision tooling that supports the production of high-quality products on schedule.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited apprenticeship or technical training program in mold making, tool making, or precision machining. Minimum of 5 years of experience in mold making, tool making, or precision machining within a manufacturing environment. Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings and blueprints.
Hands-on experience with CNC machining, EDM, grinding, and manual machine tools. Strong knowledge of materials, machining processes, and precision measurement tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate degree or higher in machining technology, manufacturing engineering, or a related field. Experience with CAD/CAM software for programming CNC machines and designing tooling components. Certification from recognized industry organizations such as the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS). Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
Demonstrated leadership experience in mentoring or supervising machining teams.
Responsibilities
Interpret and analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to plan and execute mold and tool fabrication. Operate and program CNC machines, EDM equipment, and manual machine tools to manufacture precision components. Assemble, fit, and finish molds and tools, ensuring all parts meet strict dimensional and quality standards.
Perform routine maintenance, repair, and modification of existing molds and tools to optimize performance and longevity. Collaborate with engineers and production staff to troubleshoot tooling issues and implement corrective actions. Maintain accurate documentation of tooling processes, measurements, and maintenance activities.
Train and mentor junior machinists and apprentices to develop their technical skills and knowledge. Skills: The required skills enable the Senior Mold Maker to accurately interpret technical drawings and translate them into precise tooling components using a variety of machining techniques. Proficiency with CNC programming and operation allows for efficient and repeatable production of complex parts, while manual machining skills ensure the ability to perform detailed finishing and adjustments.
Knowledge of materials and machining processes is essential for selecting appropriate methods and tools to achieve desired tolerances and surface finishes.
Preferred skills
such as CAD/CAM software usage enhance the ability to design and modify tooling digitally, improving accuracy and reducing lead times.
