Chief Engineer
Job description
Purpose To lead the identification, development and implementation of engineering solutions which are aimed at optimization of the efficiency and effectiveness of manufacturing assets and processes.

Supports the deepening of technical competence amongst Plant Production and Maintenance teams by: Developing and executing technical training modules which are focused on fundamentals of engineering technology, effective failure troubleshooting, and maintenance/ repair standards for technology in use at the plants.
Developing and executing internal technical certification programs for technical Production and Maintenance roles. Researches technology developments to guide improvements to plant OEE, in alignment with world-class manufacturing ideologies. Partners with the production and operations integrity teams to develop effective and efficient operational data capture systems which support timely and robust failure analysis.
Leads the analysis of repeat equipment failures, critical equipment failures, process deviations, and the subsequent development of sustainable engineering solutions to eliminate or minimize these operational impediments. Leads the development of equipment standard operating procedures and troubleshooting manuals, which are used for internal technical certification of plant personnel.
In conjunction with Plant Maintenance Managers, leads the development of robust, effective preventive maintenance programs for all production and auxiliary equipment. This includes but is not limited to: Routine inspection plans Routine cleaning, tightening, adjustment, and lubrication plans. OEM guided and experientially developed, replacement schedules Annual overhaul and rebuild schedules.
Partners with the Plant Management Team to plan and execute planned shutdowns. Analyses the efficiency of product processing, filling and packaging, in pursuit of opportunities for reduction of manufacturing cost per case. This includes the design and implementation of solutions for run rate increases and waste reduction.
Supports proposals for capital investment with return on investment studies, and ensures the delivery of targeted ROI for every approved capital investment. Project management requirements include: Planning and implementing detailed projects plans needed to successfully complete projects and to track progress. Determining the resources (time, money, equipment etc.)
required to complete the project. Developing schedules for project completion that effectively allocate resources to the activities. Reviewing the project schedule with senior management and all other staff that will be affected by the project activities and revising as required. Liaising with contractors on the specifications for project assignments to ensure the achievement of established technical, cost and time specifications.
Contracting the services of qualified consultants to work on projects as and when appropriate. Managing project staff in accordance with established policies of the Company to maintain effective levels of productivity. Monitoring the progress of projects and making necessary adjustments to ensure successful completion.
Managing all project funds according to established accounting policies and procedures. Ensuring that accurate financial records for projects are maintained. o Providing progress reports to stakeholders and management. Reviewing the quality of the work completed with the project team on a regular basis to ensure fulfilment of project standards.
Ensuring that the project deliverables are on time, within budget and at the required level of quality. Evaluating project outcomes established during the planning phase. Supports the development and implementation of Food Safety and Quality Management Systems which are compliant with local legislative requirements, regulatory requirements and customer requirements, and which are certified under a selected GFSI standard.
Leads the analysis product quality non-conformances and the subsequent development of sustainable engineering solutions to eliminate or minimize these operational impediments. Ensures that production processing, filling and packaging systems and equipment cleaning systems are designed in conformance with GFSI standards and with the capability to reliably deliver food safe products which possess desired organoleptic characteristics.
Ensures that food processing facilities are designed in conformance with GFSI standards. Supports the management of corrective and preventive actions related to consumer or regulatory food safety/ quality audits, working with functional teams to ensure successful address and implementation. Supports the design of systems which assure product which presents any known or perceived risk to consumers will not be released.
Provides leadership for loss prevention throughout manufacturing operations and by extension the community by: Supporting the development and implementation of an HSE Management System which is aligned with international standards, local legislative and regulatory requirements. Supporting the routine and non-routine/project-based identification of operational HSE related hazards and assessment of risk.
Supporting the development of solutions for improving health, safety, and environmental management practices Supporting the investigation of safety incidents and leading the execution of corrective actions as needed. Drives a culture of service excellence within the engineering team, ensuring their commitment to do whatever is necessary for demand fulfilment and customer satisfaction.
Stays abreast of industry developments in the areas of manufacturing materials, manufacturing technology and manufacturing management systems, to guide the development of business growth, innovation and resilience strategies. Develops and proposes projects which are aimed at driving capacity growth, portfolio innovation, cost per case reduction and loss prevention.
Leads the design and implementation of process modifications required for new product introductions.
Requirements
Qualification and Experience BSc. Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Fifteen (15) years combined experience in engineering, maintenance or other technical process/ asset management roles. Ten (10) years experience leading teams responsible for major equipment upgrades and selection/installation/commissioning of new equipment.
Five (5) years experience in a food manufacturing environment. A Registered Engineer with the Board of Engineering of Trinidad and Tobago. Training in asset management and maintenance management systems. CQE or CQM certification would be considered an asset. Certification in HACCP development and internal auditor certification under a GFSI standard would also be considered assets.
Training is HSE risk assessment and engineering design for hazard elimination would be considered an asset.
