A Construction Inspector at H2M architects + engineers works alongside our inspectors and engineers, both in the office preparing daily reports and in the field at project sites, observing construction activities and related fieldwork for varying projects in conformance with project plans and specifications as well as associated construction administration activities.
We offer this role at three levels: Construction Inspector 1 & 2, recognizing growth in technical capabilities, autonomy, and responsibility as experience increases. H2M’s Construction Services team ensures that projects are built to the highest standards from groundbreaking to closeout. We provide on‑site monitoring, materials verification, quality control, and detailed field documentation to keep construction aligned with approved plans and specifications.
By supporting schools, municipalities, and public utilities, we help deliver safe, reliable, and cost‑effective facilities that communities depend on.
Key Responsibilities
Drive to and from multiple project sites during any given day as needed to observe contractors' activities, construction work, and related field work. Prepare daily reports, correspondence, change orders, periodic payment estimates, and quantity computations. Daily monitoring of contractor operations and verifying conformance with project plans and specifications.
Observe details of work performed by others, document results; obtain photographic documentation of work performed. Confirm compliance with technical documents and industry-specific standards and codes. Review and download field data onto a laptop computer and transfer to the company server. Discuss projects with the project team on a daily basis.
Make accurate judgment calls on a variety of construction field activities. Other duties as assigned.
Education
& Qualifications 0 to 4 years of experience in the construction industry is preferred. Construction Inspector 1: 0 to 2 years of experience in the construction industry. Construction Inspector 2: 2 to 4 years of experience in the construction industry. Valid driver’s license, with a clean history, is required. Knowledge of construction techniques and procedures is required.
Water main and Right-of-Way experience is a plus. Must have good computer skills and be able to learn related software. Good judgment and organizational skills. Additional Requirements Ability to stand, climb, and walk continuously during an 8+-hour period. Ability to climb ladders +/-20’ with a 35-pound load. Ability to ride in man lifts to perform inspections.
Ability to perform strenuous work in all climates (Ex. heat and cold, etc.) Must have a smartphone for use in daily field activities. This role requires some travel. Business-related travel may involve visits to project sites, client locations, and other H2M offices and may require the use of a personal vehicle. This is a non-exempt, hourly role that may occasionally require flexibility outside standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and select holidays, to support project schedules, client needs, and business priorities.
This position will support ongoing construction projects. While the exact project duration is undefined, we currently anticipate an 18-month period based on business needs. This period may be lengthened based on future business needs. Pushing boundaries, redefining design.
