26 � $85,857.57 annually Position Summary The CTE Explorations Teacher introduces students to career and technical education through hands-on, project-based learning. The teacher is based at the Oak Hill High School site and helps students build practical skills, explore career pathways, and prepare for the transition into the Lewiston Regional Technical Center.
Program Overview Each Explorations program is tailored to the interests of its school's administration and students: Core components (all sites): Carpentry and small engines. Second component (varies by site): Current offerings include culinary arts, pre-engineering and manufacturing basics, electrical, plumbing, and a medical component.
Class structure: Three periods per day at most sites. The one school on a full schedule runs six shorter classes per day. Class size: About 12 students on average, with some classes up to 15. CTE 2 section: One section is set aside for students who especially benefit from this connection to school. Their projects are more in-depth and often improve the school itself, such as building picnic tables for an outdoor club and renovating a teachers' lounge after water damage. LRTC funds the renovation of the program space, equipment, and supplies, and provides substitute coverage when the teacher is out. A special education coordinator supports teachers and students as students transition into CTE. Essential Requirement: Availability The employee must be available and able to work five (5) days per week, Monday through Friday, according to the Lewiston Public Schools schedule. This is an essential function of the position, not a preference. Hands-on shop instruction depends on a consistent, qualified teacher who knows the equipment and the students. Regular, predictable attendance is therefore required, along with scheduled professional development and school events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned. Instruction Develop lesson plans, projects, and instructional materials for the program's carpentry, small-engine, and site-specific components. Provide individualized and small-group instruction that adapts the curriculum to each student's needs. Plan more in-depth, school-improvement projects for the CTE 2 section.
Connect hands-on work to career pathways, and help prepare students for the transition into the Lewiston Regional Technical Center. Assess students' skill development and academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and provide progress reports as requested. Shop safety and equipment Teach and enforce safe use of tools, equipment, and materials, including personal protective equipment, and make sure each student is trained before using equipment.
Maintain tools, equipment, and the shop space in safe working order, and report needed repairs. Manage inventory of equipment and supplies, and coordinate purchasing with LRTC. Classroom and student support Establish and maintain standards of student behavior that create a safe and effective learning atmosphere. Identify student needs, make appropriate referrals, and help develop strategies for IEPs, working with the special education coordinator and other district specialists.
Plan and coordinate the work of ed techs and volunteers in the shop and on field trips. Showcase student projects and work to the school community. Communication Communicate regularly with parents through notes, phone calls, conferences, and other means. Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes.
Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises the classroom and shop, students, and volunteers, and directs the work of assigned ed techs, with assistance, advice, and support from administration.
Qualifications

Education, experience, and certification Associate degree or higher Trade experience in carpentry, welding, or electrical work Valid Maine teaching certificate with the appropriate career and technical education endorsement [or eligibility for a conditional certificate] [OSHA 10 certification, or willingness to obtain it] Completed criminal history record check (fingerprinting), as required by Maine law Available and able to work 5 days per week per the Lewiston Public Schools schedule Language skills Read and interpret technical manuals, building codes, safety data sheets, and government regulations.
Write lesson plans, reports, and correspondence. Present information and respond to questions from students, parents, colleagues, and the public. Mathematical skills Apply measurement, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical shop situations. Use plane and solid geometry, and basic trigonometry for layout and angles, as applied to carpentry and pre-engineering work.
Reasoning ability Solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables where only limited standardization exists. Interpret instructions given in written, oral, diagram, blueprint, or schedule form. Other skills and abilities Apply current research and theory to the instructional program, and plan lessons based on district and school objectives and students' needs and abilities.
Engage students who may be less connected to traditional school. Build and maintain effective relationships with students, colleagues, and parents. Communicate skillfully, both orally and in writing. Perform duties in line with all district requirements and School Committee policies.
Compensation
and Benefits The salary range for this position is $45,518.26 to $85,857.57 annually, with placement on the teacher salary schedule based on education and experience. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform them. Stand and walk for prolonged periods while teaching and supervising shop work. Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach, and occasionally climb ladders. Lift, carry, and move materials, engines, and equipment weighing up to [50] pounds.
Operate hand and power tools safely, and demonstrate their correct use to students. Use close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, and depth perception, to supervise students and inspect work. Hear well enough to notice equipment problems, alarms, and student safety concerns in a noisy shop. Work takes place mainly in a school shop and classroom, and occasionally outdoors or elsewhere on school grounds for projects.
The noise level is moderate to loud. The employee works near moving machinery and power tools and may be exposed to dust, fuel and exhaust fumes, sharp tools, hot surfaces, and cleaning and finishing chemicals. Personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and hearing protection, is required as appropriate. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.
