OPERATOR IN TRAINING: (WATER & WASTEWATER) Department: Public Services/ Utilities Salary: D.O.Q. Classification: Regular Full-Time / Non-Exempt Opening Date: October 08, 2026 Closing Date: October 14, 2026 SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES The Utility Operator in Training is an entry-level position designed to develop skills in water distribution, Water treatment and wastewater collection system operations.
The employee assists certified operators with daily tasks including system checks, maintenance, repairs, sampling, documentation, and customer service. This position provides hands-on training and prepares the employee to obtain Grade 1 certifications in water and wastewater. Work is performed under close supervision of the Public Services Director, Assistant Director, and Lead Operator.
As skills increase, the employee will be expected to perform tasks with growing independence.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
System Training Duties Assist with daily inspection of wells, pumps, tanks, valves, meters, and chlorination systems. Learn to complete operational logs, chlorine residuals, and pressure readings. Assist with leak response, meter checks, and customer service calls. Support certified operators with water line repairs, service line replacements, meter installations, and system flushing.
Must be available to be put on rotating on call with operator. Maintain cleanliness of facilities, equipment, and vehicles. General Duties Follow all safety procedures including PPE use, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, and traffic control. Learn to maintain accurate records using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Participate in training, classes, and study sessions to obtain ADEQ Grade 1 certifications.
Maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and customers. Work in adverse weather conditions and perform physical labor. Use hand and power tools safely under supervision. Perform other duties as assigned to support system reliability and public health protection.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or GED. No experience required; mechanical aptitude preferred. Plumbing, electrical, construction, or utility experience a plus. Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and respond to assist with emergencies within 1 hour during training. Obtain Grade 1 certification in water or wastewater. To Retain position.
Must possess a valid Driver's License and be eligible for Tribal insurance. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work outdoors in all weather.
