About the role
As a school custodian, the primary goal is to create a clean, safe, and inviting environment for students, staff, and visitors. By diligently maintaining the cleanliness of classrooms, hallways, and common areas, the custodian aims to promote a conducive atmosphere for learning and productivity. What you'll do
General Overview Responsible for routine daily cleaning and disinfecting of our school by vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and the use of an automatic floor scrubber. Keeps buildings and premises, including walkways, parking lot, and play areas neat and clean at all times. Checks daily to ensure exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture. Cleans daily the corridors after school, and during the day when the condition requires it. Daily scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects bathroom floors, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains. Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
Keeps the grounds free from rubbish. Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition. Weekly cleans all chalkboards and marker boards. Promptly reports major repairs needed to the Administrator. Remains on the school property during assigned school hours Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Administrator.
Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste. Assumes responsibility for the safe condition of outdoor structures. Other duties as required Facilities Management: ● Performs daily, weekly, and monthly building inspections with a high attention to detail to identify necessary repairs.
● Ensures that the facility is “tour ready” for all parents and the community at all times. ● Assists with daily cleaning and maintenance. ● Performs routine maintenance and timely repairs in the areas of painting, carpentry, plumbing, food and beverage equipment, seating and all related building components. ● Establishes a preventative maintenance plan and monitoring system.
● Oversees vendor activities that include the scheduling of repair and maintenance needs as required; closely monitors progress to ensure quality of work. ● Provides constant attention to all life safety issues; ensures building emergency systems are operational through in-house inspections and vendor maintenance contracts.
● Inspects and monitors all safety systems to ensure maximum operational functioning (e.g. fire alarm systems, burglar alarm systems, video monitoring systems, etc.) ● Inspects and provides direction and follow-up with janitorial service provider and/or Custodians regarding cleaning issues that do not meet Academy standards.
● Reports all facility issues that are not immediately repairable to school administration. ● Collects informal quotes on repairs or improvements that improve building operations or efficiencies, according to established financial procedures. ● Ensures consistent maintenance and repair methods for all building components.
Develops routine systems to ensure constant monitoring of problem areas. ● Completes the K-12 Homeland Security Checklist at least annually and makes recommendations for improvement to administration. ● Performs monthly playground inspections and conducts annual playground inspection training with staff. ● Monitors all environmental health inspections (AHERA, Water Quality, etc.)
and completes all required corrective action. ● Follows instructions on safe use of all chemicals/cleaning materials. Performs tasks with tools, ladders, and lifts in a safe and effective manner. ● Ability to work and meet deadlines with minimal supervision. ● Provides training support for other school staff as directed.
● Upholds the Academy’s mission and vision and follows all established company policies and procedures. ● Maintains regular personal attendance. ● Completes all other functions and assignments as assigned by Academy administration.
Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age. High school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrate aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities. Ability to work effectively with school personnel and students in a diverse school community. Solid record of punctuality. Willing to be trained. Reliable and team-oriented. Desired Requirements: Previous custodial experience a plus.
