Field Supervisor - Protection & Control
Job description
Summary The Field Supervisor Protection & Control (P&C) is responsible for ensuring electrical power systems and critical equipment operate safely, efficiently, reliably, and without unplanned downtime. This position combines hands-on technical work, including testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, and maintenance of protection and control systems—with field supervision, technical leadership, and proactive reliability strategies.
The Field Supervisor oversees day-to-day P&C field activities and provides technical direction, training, mentoring, and development to P&C Technicians. This position is responsible for ensuring work is performed safely, accurately, and efficiently in accordance with Taurus Industrial Group (TIG) standards, customer requirements, applicable industry standards, and project specifications.
The role serves as a technical resource for field personnel and works closely with project leadership, customers, engineers, and other Power & Reliability personnel to support successful project execution and the continued development of TIG's P&C capabilities. Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree, technical degree, electrical apprenticeship, military electrical training, or equivalent technical education preferred. Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in protection and control, electrical testing, commissioning, substation maintenance, or related power systems work preferred.
Demonstrated experience with protective relays, control systems, electrical testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning. Previous experience leading field crews, technicians, or technical project activities strongly preferred. Experience working with low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical power systems and associated protection and control equipment.
Experience interpreting electrical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, DC control schematics, and relay logic. Experience with applicable relay testing software, test equipment, and diagnostic tools. Working knowledge of electrical safety requirements and applicable industry standards.
Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements when driving is an essential function of the position. Ability to travel and work overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, outages, and emergency assignments as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Advanced knowledge of electrical protection and control principles, systems, and equipment.
Strong understanding of protective relaying applications, control circuits, metering, and power system protection. Knowledge of electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based protective relays. Knowledge of relay functions and protection schemes associated with transformers, buses, feeders, motors, generators, transmission, and distribution systems.
Ability to perform and oversee protective relay testing, functional testing, troubleshooting, calibration, and commissioning. Ability to interpret relay settings, logic diagrams, event reports, sequence-of-events data, and test results. Knowledge of current and potential transformers (CTs and PTs/VTs), trip and close circuits, breaker control schemes, annunciation, and DC control systems.
Familiarity with SCADA systems, RTUs, PLCs, communication systems, and associated control interfaces. Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, logic diagrams, and manufacturer documentation. Knowledge of electrical testing equipment, relay test sets, digital multimeters, and other specialized diagnostic equipment.
Working knowledge of NFPA 70E and applicable NETA, ANSI, IEEE, OSHA, customer, and manufacturer requirements. Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with the ability to identify system and equipment problems and determine appropriate corrective actions. Strong leadership skills with the ability to direct, coach, train, mentor, and develop technicians at varying experience levels.
Ability to plan field activities, assign work, manage priorities, and coordinate resources to meet project schedules. Ability to identify safety, quality, technical, and schedule risks and escalate concerns appropriately. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with customers, engineers, project managers, technicians, contractors, and other stakeholders.
Ability to accurately review technical documentation, testing records, field reports, and commissioning documentation.
Essential Functions
Supervise and coordinate day-to-day Protection & Control field activities, technicians, and assigned project resources. Perform and oversee testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, commissioning, and repair of protection and control systems. Provide hands-on technical support for complex P&C testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
Perform and oversee protective relay testing, functional testing, trip testing, control circuit verification, and commissioning activities. Verify protective relay settings, logic, wiring, and operation against approved drawings, specifications, and project requirements. Troubleshoot protective relays, control circuits, CT/PT circuits, breaker controls, trip and close circuits, communication interfaces, and related equipment.
Assist with testing and commissioning of SCADA, RTUs, PLCs, communications, and other control system interfaces when applicable. Analyze test results, event records, system conditions, and equipment performance to identify deficiencies and determine corrective actions. Review electrical drawings, relay settings, specifications, procedures, and project documentation before and during field execution.
Coordinate commissioning, energization, outage, and return-to-service activities with customers, engineers, project management, and other field teams. Lead pre-job planning, job safety analyses, toolbox meetings, and technical discussions for assigned work. Assign work to P&C Technicians based on project requirements, qualifications, experience, and demonstrated competencies.
Monitor field performance to ensure work is completed safely, accurately, efficiently, and within project schedule requirements. Provide technical guidance and field support to Junior P&C Technicians, P&C Technicians, and other assigned personnel. Train, mentor, and develop technicians in relay testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, documentation, electrical safety, and proper work practices.
Evaluate technician performance and technical development and provide feedback regarding training needs and progression opportunities. Promote consistent testing methods, documentation standards, quality expectations, and technical best practices across the P&C team. Review test sheets, commissioning documentation, deficiency reports, service reports, and other technical records for accuracy and completeness.
Identify equipment deficiencies, design discrepancies, testing concerns, and other technical issues and communicate findings to appropriate project and customer representatives. Ensure test equipment and specialized tools are properly maintained, calibrated, and appropriate for the work being performed. Ensure compliance with TIG safety policies, customer requirements, NFPA 70E, applicable OSHA requirements, and established electrical safe work practices.
Serve as a technical point of contact for customers and project leadership regarding assigned P&C field activities. Support project planning by identifying manpower, equipment, tooling, scheduling, and technical requirements for upcoming work. Assist with the development and implementation of procedures, standards, training materials, and best practices for P&C operations.
Support outage, shutdown, emergency response, and other time-sensitive field assignments as required. Perform other duties as assigned Physical Demands Ability to regularly stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and move throughout active industrial facilities, substations, and project sites. Ability to walk and work on uneven terrain, gravel, concrete, elevated platforms, and other industrial surfaces.
Ability to climb stairs and ladders as required to access electrical equipment and work areas. Ability to work at various elevations and in confined or restricted equipment areas when properly trained and authorized. Ability to wear required PPE, including electrical and arc-rated protective equipment, for extended periods.
Ability to visually inspect electrical equipment, wiring, relay panels, drawings, test instruments, and test results. Ability to safely handle and operate relay test sets, electrical testing equipment, hand tools, and related equipment. Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to communicate effectively and safely perform work in environments with moderate to elevated noise levels Work Environment This position primarily works in substations, power generation facilities, industrial plants, manufacturing facilities, petrochemical facilities, utility environments, and other customer locations.
Work may be performed indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to electrical hazards, energized equipment, high-voltage environments, elevated noise levels, moving equipment, chemicals, dust, fumes, heat, cold, and varying weather conditions. The position requires strict adherence to TIG and customer safety requirements, electrical safe work practices, and required PPE.
Work involving energized electrical equipment or electrical hazards must be performed in accordance with applicable qualifications, authorization, procedures, and safety requirements. Frequent travel and work outside normal business hours may be required, including nights, weekends, holidays, scheduled outages, shutdowns, commissioning activities, and emergency assignments based on customer and project requirements
