Job description

Purpose of the Role The Pump Maintenance Fitter is responsible for the maintenance, repair, refurbishment, and testing of various types of industrial pumps. The incumbent will ensure that all pump equipment operates at optimal performance levels through systematic stripping, fault-finding, reassembly, and testing procedures, in support of ongoing project operations.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Pump Maintenance & Repair Strip, inspect, and assess pumps for wear, damage, and defects Identify faulty components and determine repair or replacement requirements Perform mechanical repairs, including replacement of bearings, seals, impellers, shafts, couplings, and casings Reassemble pumps to manufacturer specifications and tolerances Carry out full refurbishment of pumps, including machining-related tasks where required
  2. Fault-Finding & Diagnostics Conduct systematic fault-finding on pump systems using mechanical and diagnostic tools Diagnose issues related to vibration, leakage, pressure loss, overheating, and performance degradation Determine root causes of failures and implement corrective actions Read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and schematic diagrams
  3. Testing & Commissioning Perform post-repair testing, including pressure testing, flow testing, and performance verification Ensure all pumps meet operational standards before being returned to service Record and document test results and maintenance outcomes Assist with site installation and commissioning of pumps where required
  4. Preventive Maintenance Execute scheduled preventive maintenance plans on pump systems Conduct routine inspections and condition monitoring Maintain accurate maintenance logs and service records Identify and report potential risks or recurring issues to the supervisor
  5. Workshop & Tool Management Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment Ensure all tools and equipment are used correctly, calibrated, and stored appropriately Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations
  6. Collaboration & Reporting Work closely with the maintenance team, supervisors, and project stakeholders Provide technical input and feedback on equipment condition and repair feasibility Communicate job progress, delays, and technical concerns to the supervisor Support and mentor junior staff or apprentices where applicable Requirements Minimum Qualifications & Requirements Trade Certification Valid Trade Certificate (Fitter / Mechanical Fitter) — mandatory Experience Minimum 5 years relevant work experience in pump maintenance Technical Skills Stripping, fault-finding, assembly, refurbishment, and testing of pumps Knowledge Understanding of pump components, mechanical seals, bearings, couplings, and drive systems Drawing Interpretation Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical manuals Tools Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments Physical Fitness Must be medically fit and able to perform physical work in a workshop/site environment Competencies & Personal Attributes Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship Ability to work independently and as part of a team Good communication skills Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious Ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines
