Assistant Medical Underwriting Manager

General Overview: We are excited to be partnering with a leading insurance organization to recruit a Medical Underwriter to join their high-performing team. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced underwriting professional to step into a role that offers strong ownership, visibility, and impact, contributing directly to portfolio strategy, profitability, and long-term sustainability.
Working closely with senior stakeholders, this role goes beyond day-to-day underwriting and offers the opportunity to influence decision-making, strengthen underwriting governance, and support the expansion of Group, SME, and Individual business lines.
Key Responsibilities
Lead underwriting activities across Group, SME, and Individual medical insurance portfolios Assess complex medical risks, determining appropriate pricing, terms, and coverage structures Analyze claims experience, utilization trends, and risk profiles to drive informed underwriting decisions Support portfolio growth while maintaining strong underwriting discipline and loss ratio control Partner with business development teams and brokers to structure competitive and sustainable solutions Manage renewals strategically, identifying risks and opportunities to enhance retention and profitability Monitor portfolio performance and proactively identify areas for improvement Contribute to underwriting governance, ensuring alignment with internal policies and regulatory standards Support portfolio reviews, reporting, and strategic planning initiatives Key Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Allied Health Sciences, Insurance, Risk Management, or a related field 5+ years of experience in medical underwriting Strong exposure to Group, SME, and Individual medical insurance portfolios Professional qualifications such as CII / Dip CII are preferred Strong technical expertise in risk assessment, pricing, and underwriting decision-making Good understanding of market practices and regulatory frameworks within the medical insurance space Proven ability to balance commercial growth with disciplined underwriting practices Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills Ability to operate in a fast-paced, performance-driven environment
