Sheet Metal Mechanic
Job description
Standard Job Description This occupation requires the layout, fabrication, assembly, installation and repair of sheet metal maintenance parts, fittings, equipment and systems. Work Performed Makes flat sheet metal layouts from blueprint of finished parts, such as sheet metal "square-to-round" transitions, offsets, flashing, tapered elbows, transitional elbows, "Y" branches and compound fittings.
Develops layouts using trade shortcuts based on principles of solid geometry. Fabricates sheet metal parts such as vents, ducts, safety guards, hoppers, cyclones, cabinets for test benches, hoods, heater stacks, roof flashings and gutters. Fabricates sheet metal pans, funnels, boxes, trays, port chutes, scoops for portable sweepers and other small work.
Assembles and installs complete major exhaust systems, ventilating systems, air conditioning systems, and all duct work for refrigerator units. Assembles formed or flat sheet metal parts by soldering, riveting, setting up and operating spot welder and/or screwing parts together. Lays out, fabricates, assembles and installs sheet metal work on such equipment as pressurizing unit used to make pressure cabin tests.
Hot forms parts by hand to correct warpage caused by welding. Forms water-tight sheet metal frame around glass sheet. Works at various heights. Performs rework wherein the operations are essentially the same as described above. Performs general maintenance work as required, such as hanging banners and tarps, etc. Typical Materials, Tools and Equipment Used Materials worked on: Cold roll steel, brass, lead coat, copper and galvanized iron in sheet form, solder, rivets, spot weld electrode, paddles, screws and bolts.
Tools used: Hammer, drill, punch, screwdriver, hand shears, and other hand tools. Powered uni-shear, nibbler, hammer, grinders, saws and rivet guns. Equipment used: Spot welder, manual punches, circle shear, hand roller, hand brake, folder, crimping machine, beading machine, turning machine, wiring machine, swaging machine, drill press, rivet gun, soldering equipment, ladders, etc.
Power brakes, shears, roll, punch, edger, block former, bandsaw, sander, and grinder. Knowledge and Ability Required To set up and operate machinery, tools, and equipment described herein. To apply a complete knowledge of layout methods and geometric principles and sheet metal shop theory and practice. To read and interpret detail, assembly and installation blueprints.
To use shop mathematics, including trigonometry.
Basic Qualifications
A candidate is required to have one of the following minimum levels of experience and/or training:
- Three years experience in commercial or industrial sheet metal work. OR
- Completion of approved apprenticeship program in manufacturing and installation of sheet metal components of three or more years duration. NOTE: Requirements include the ability to work from written instructions, detail blue prints, to use shop math, to layout and fabricate square to round and transition configurations using a variety of shop tools and equipment. 67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
