Backend & Platform Engineer
Job description
Backend & Platform Engineer | Sports Betting Hedge Fund Startup | London Please note: this role cannot provide sponsorship. Applicants must have existing right to work. The role can be fully remote but you need to be based in UK. I’m working with a specialist sports data and technology business looking for a Senior Backend & Platform Engineer to join a small, technically strong team.
This is not a traditional DevOps role . You’ll spend a significant amount of your time building production software, while also owning the AWS environment and helping shape how the platform runs in production. The key distinction: We’re looking for a software engineer with strong infrastructure capability — not a DevOps engineer whose development experience is primarily scripting and automation.
Depending on your background, you’ll work on either a core Java platform or Python-based trading and market-making systems , operating in a highly data-driven sports environment. The team values engineers who are pragmatic, hands-on and comfortable with broad ownership — people who can get things working, improve them iteratively and take responsibility when things hit production.
What you’ll be working with: ? Java / Spring Boot or Python ? AWS – genuine ownership of production infrastructure ? Containers, ideally ECS ? Infrastructure as Code ? CI/CD, monitoring & observability ? IAM, networking & security ? Incident response & production ownership
