Middle School Mathematics Teacher
Job description
About the Role
Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science prepares students to excel in mathematics, science, and beyond, cultivating the curiosity, rigor, and confidence they need to become the next generation of STEM leaders. As a Middle School Mathematics Teacher, you are central to that mission. You will design and deliver standards-aligned, inquiry-driven mathematics instruction that meets students where they are, closes learning gaps, and challenges every learner to reason, problem-solve, and communicate mathematically.
We are seeking an educator who believes deeply that all students can achieve at high levels and who brings both content expertise and warmth to the classroom.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Planning Plan and deliver rigorous, standards-aligned mathematics instruction (Common Core / DC math standards) for grades 6–8, including pre-algebra and introductory algebra concepts. Design engaging lessons that develop conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world problem solving. Differentiate instruction and provide scaffolds and extensions to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 plans, and English learners.
Integrate appropriate technology and hands-on tools to make mathematics accessible and relevant. Assessment & Data Use formative and summative assessments to monitor progress and adjust instruction. Analyze student performance data to inform planning, intervention, and small-group instruction. Maintain accurate, timely records of grades, attendance, and student progress.
Classroom Culture & Student Support Establish a safe, orderly, and inclusive classroom environment with clear routines and high expectations for behavior and achievement. Build strong, supportive relationships that foster a growth mindset and students' confidence in mathematics. Support the social-emotional development and overall well-being of students.
Collaboration & Professional Growth Collaborate with grade-level and content teams to align curriculum, share best practices, and plan interventions. Communicate regularly with families about student progress and partner with them to support learning. Participate actively in professional development, staff meetings, and school events, and pursue continuous improvement of instructional practice.
Perform other duties as assigned in support of the school's mission (e.g., supervision, advisory, tutoring, or club sponsorship).
Qualifications
Required Bachelor's degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or a related field. Valid teaching certification in mathematics or middle grades (or eligibility to obtain the appropriate license upon hire). Strong mathematics content knowledge across the middle-grades curriculum, including pre-algebra and algebra. Demonstrated commitment to equity and to the belief that all students can achieve at high levels.
Effective classroom management and the ability to build positive relationships with students and families. Preferred Master's degree in education, mathematics, or a related field. Two or more years of successful middle school teaching experience. Experience with data-driven instruction and standards-based grading. Experience serving students in an urban or STEM-focused school setting.
Key Competencies Instructional excellence and deep mathematics content expertise. High expectations paired with strong relationship-building and cultural responsiveness. Reflective, collaborative, and open to coaching and feedback. Organized, dependable, and able to manage multiple priorities. Clear communication with students, colleagues, and families.
Physical Demands & Work Environment Work is performed in a school and classroom setting. The role requires the ability to stand and move throughout the classroom for extended periods, occasionally lift up to 25 pounds, and use technology and instructional materials. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
