Refractive Surgery Consultant

Chaska, MNPosted Nov 3, 2026

Job description

Southwest Eye Care is hiring for a full-time Refractive Surgery Consultant for our Chaska, MN location! We are ambassadors of integrity, who are committed to individualized care using remarkable technology, to create an exceptional patient experience. We are dedicated to creating work/life harmony in an efficient and enjoyable environment for everyone who enters our clinics.

What you’ll be doing This is a patient-facing, education-focused role requiring strong consultative communication skills, empathy, and the ability to help patients make confident, informed decisions about their vision in a clinical setting. The ideal candidate is comfortable discussing elective procedures and their associated costs and financing, and consistently helps patients choose the options that best fit their visual goals and lifestyle.

A day in your life might include… Meet the patient promptly and receive a provider handoff from the surgeon, in whatever form that handoff takes, so the counselor understands the physician's lens recommendation and the consult stays aligned with the surgeon. Carry the physician's lens recommendation forward and educate the patient on it, explaining the benefits and honest trade-offs of the practice's premium lens options and covering outcome and package before discussing cost.

Match premium lens recommendations to each patient's visual goals using approved language for the practice's lens options, and use tools such as the Rendia Vision Simulator to demonstrate the value and lifestyle benefits of premium lenses. Discuss pricing and financing clearly and transparently, explaining what the package includes, the insurance contribution, and the patient's remaining cost, and give the patient time to consider their options.

Present financing options and tailor the timing of the payment conversation to the patient's financial situation without changing the integrity of the clinical recommendation. Collect payment from patients as needed for premium and elective procedures. Answer patient questions and concerns, such as cost, a preference for insurance-only coverage, wanting to consult a spouse, or hesitation, using approved, patient-first responses that reconnect the conversation to the patient's goals.

Guide the patient to a clear next step, offering to reserve a surgery date during the consult and presenting specific scheduling options so the patient can move forward with confidence. Dispense surgical drops as needed. Recognize when a patient is a strong candidate for premium options and adjust the consult to connect the recommendation to the patient's daily life and goals.

Conduct timely, structured follow-up with patients who have not yet decided, including contact within 24 hours and a second follow-up within three to five days, to answer remaining questions and support the patient's decision. Document every patient interaction, decision, lens selection, and the reason a patient chooses not to proceed accurately and promptly in the CRM/PM system.

Partner closely with physicians, clinical teams, scheduling, and marketing to reinforce recommendations and ensure a seamless experience from consultation through surgery. Stay current on premium lens technologies, financing programs, and industry developments so you can educate patients accurately. Other duties as assigned.

You meet these requirements: Experience in patient education, patient counseling, or a consultative patient-facing role, ideally in an elective or vision care setting. Demonstrated ability to build rapport with patients and physicians and to reinforce clinical recommendations while supporting patient decision-making. Comfortable discussing elective procedures and their associated costs and financing options with patients in a confident, empathetic, and professional manner.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret patient education, adoption, and consult-quality data to improve individual performance. High emotional intelligence with the ability to address patient questions and concerns thoughtfully during high-consideration healthcare decisions. Ability to build trust and rapport quickly and help patients feel confident in their decisions during time-sensitive consultations.

Patient-first mindset focused on helping patients choose the options that best fit their visual goals and lifestyle. College degree and or equivalent experience, with healthcare, communication, or business-related coursework preferred. Experience in a medical office with extensive patient experience required. A minimum of two years of experience in a patient-facing healthcare, counseling, sales or customer service role required.
