Field Guide
Job description
We are seeking an exceptional, highly personable Senior Field Guide for an ultra-luxury, exclusive-use private safari villa. Operating with an elite level of service, this property hosts high-net-worth local and international guests who expect completely tailored, private, and flexible safari itineraries. As a Field Guide at this premier property, you are far more than a driver; you are a key host and storyteller.
You will be responsible for creating highly curated, safe, and deeply informative game drive and bush walk experiences. Because this is an exclusive villa rather than a commercial multi-room lodge, you will work within a small, tight-knit team where multi-skilling, immaculate personal presentation, and warm guest hosting are paramount.
Key Responsibilities
- Bespoke Guest Guiding & Hosting Conduct private, highly flexible game drives and wilderness bush walks tailored entirely to the specific interests of the villa's exclusive guests. Host guests with exceptional warmth, confidence, and conversational flair from arrival to departure, including hosting select meals and social drinks. Provide expert, insightful interpretation of the Greater Kruger ecosystem, covering mammals, birds, tracking, geology, and local conservation initiatives.
- Vehicle & Equipment Stewardship Perform daily pre-drive inspections, routine maintenance checks, and meticulous cleaning of luxury safari vehicles. Ensure all game drive amenities (bush-stop catering, hot boxes, cooler boxes, blankets, and guest drink preferences) are immaculately prepared. Manage and maintain all field and tracking equipment, including radios, spot-lamps, and company firearms, strictly according to local regulations.
- Habitat & Safety Management Maintain absolute adherence to safety protocols, emergency medical procedures, and responsible, low-impact off-road driving guidelines. Assist the estate management team with minor conservation tasks, including alien vegetation monitoring, road maintenance checking, and localized bush management.
Requirements
Minimum 2–3 years of active guiding experience within a high-end 5-star lodge or exclusive-use luxury villa environment. Guiding Credentials: CATHSSETA Nature Site Guide qualification (Level 2 or NQF4 preferred). Tracks & Trails: Full Trails Guide certificate or Advanced Rifle Handling (ARH) is highly advantageous. Firearm Proficiency: Current SASSETA firearm competency for self-defense and business purposes.
Compliance & Logistics: Valid South African Code 8 (Code B) driver’s license. Valid Public Driver’s Permit (PrDP). Active First Aid Certification. Valid registration with DEAT/Department of Tourism. Language & Communication: Exceptional command of spoken and written English. Proficiency in local languages (such as Tsonga/Shangaan or Afrikaans) is a significant advantage.
Benefits
What We Offer
A market-related, experience-dependent salary package. On-site live-in accommodation with all meals provided during your duty cycle. Uniform allowance and specialized gear tracking support. The opportunity to work in a pristine, low-density wilderness environment providing a private-villa experience.
