The Night Shift Mission

Overnight Shelter Staff - Clay Street keeps our low‑barrier shelter steady, safe, and welcoming when the city quiets down. You’ll support guests overnight, complete intake and bed assignments, monitor shared spaces, distribute basic supplies, and document incidents and required paperwork while following confidentiality and safety protocols. You’ll use calm, trauma‑informed communication to de‑escalate conflict and respond to crises.

Required qualifications/skills:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Shelter/residential experience preferred
• Basic crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and trauma‑informed care knowledge
• Strong interpersonal communication, empathy, and cultural sensitivity
• Basic computer/paperwork skills; confidentiality and protocol adherence
• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
• Availability for 12‑hour rotating overnight shifts (2-2-3), weekends/holidays

Midnight to Morning

Your shift kicks off at 7:00 PM at City Center YMCA (265 Harrisburg Avenue, Lancaster). The building settles, the pace changes, and you become the steady presence people count on. You’ll move between quiet check-ins, quick problem-solving, and moments of real connection-then the overnight rhythm hits: rounds, notes, and staying alert for anything that could impact Safety. Some nights are smooth and focused; others bring fast, high-stakes moments where a calm voice changes the outcome. As dawn approaches, you wrap up details, set the next shift up for success, and head out at 7:00 AM knowing you helped the shelter make it through the night.

Obtain Criminal background check, Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI fingerprint clearance.
