Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled, safety-minded Lead Fleet Technician for our shop located in Lancaster, NY, with pay up to $49/hour . Our clean, 6s shop has 3 bays, and we care for 41 CNG tractors, no trailers. As a Lead Fleet Technician , you will oversee first shift operations and manage the maintenance of our commercial vehicle fleet.
As a Level A Master Technician , you will act as the senior technical expert, handling the most complex diagnostic and repair work while providing leadership, technical direction, and mentorship to junior technicians. This role is essential to maintaining Vehicare's reputation for unmatched fleet uptime, safety, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Independently troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve complex electrical, computer, and mechanical issues on medium- to heavy-duty commercial vehicles and diesel engines Shop Leadership: Assign daily work orders, review completed repairs for quality control, and mentor apprentice mechanics to foster a high-performing team environment Diagnostics & Complex Repair: Perform heavy diagnostics on engines and execute complex repairs on transmissions, air brake systems, and suspensions.
Diverse Asset Maintenance: Manage and execute light-duty vehicle maintenance and material handling equipment (MHE) maintenance as required by site fleet configurations Compliance & Inspections: Conduct comprehensive Preventative Maintenance (PM) and Department of Transportation (DOT) safety inspections and ensure all fleet assets strictly adhere to state and federal regulations Software Proficiency: Utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic software (e.
g., Cummins Insite, Cojali Jaltest , Noregon , Diesel Laptops ) to read data streams, flash modules, and clear complex trouble codes Safety & Standards: Maintain a clean, organized shop environment in strict compliance with OSHA standards and Vehicare safety protocols Requirements Qualifications & Skills Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience working as a heavy/light duty commercial vehicle or diesel fleet technician, with prior leadership or shop foreman experience highly preferred The ability to effectively listen, and communicate with our partner clients directly The ability to assist the site manager with parts inventory and charge out parts via QR codes utilizing our internal maintenance management system Certifications: ASE Master Medium-Heavy Truck Certifications (T1–T8) are highly preferred.
A current DOT Inspector certification is required Licensing: A valid driver's license is required as well as the ability to pass DOT physical requirements; a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is highly preferred Technical Savvy: Expert-level knowledge of air brake systems and multiplex electrical networks.
Familiarity with light-duty passenger vehicles or forklift/MHE systems is a plus Leadership Abilities: Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills to manage workflows and train junior staff effectively Physical Requirements Heavy lifting: Ability to regularly lift 50-70lbs unassisted Force Exertion: Ability to regularly use hands to touch, handle, and feel.
