Sequencing Specialist(K-program)

Okinawa, JapanPosted May 18, 2026

Job description

This position is dedicated to systematically capturing and recording the "hard-to-document knowledge (tacit knowledge)" inherent in sequencing experiments, through hands-on experimental work. At the Sequencing Section (SQC) of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), the position involves introducing and improving protocols for sample preparation, library construction, sequencer operation, and related procedures—building on the fundamentals of molecular biology experiments—in collaboration with members of the section and the broader project.

The role also includes establishing a framework for documenting the processes of trial and error and decision-making in the form of text, video, audio, and dialogue (Q&A), and engaging with external experts to acquire, organize, and edit metadata through filming and interviews. These records will serve as primary source material both for educational content on life science experiments and as training data for experimental-support AI tools.

We provide an environment in which advanced sequencing techniques, the development of new protocols, and tasks such as filming and editing can be acquired progressively through on-the-job experience. This work contributes to the research and development project "Bio. SkillDX: Tacit Knowledge Acquisition and Work Support for Life Science Experimental Tasks" (Principal Investigator: Professor Yoichi Sato, The University of Tokyo; Project Period: August 1, 2025 – July 31, 2030), conducted under the Economic Security Technology Area (K Program) of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

At the intersection of life sciences and AI, this position offers a rare opportunity to transform experimental expertise into socially valuable data and educational materials.

(Required) Master's degree or higher in a science or technology field, or equivalent professional experience. Hands-on experience with the fundamentals of molecular biology experiments (such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, ligation, and enzymatic reactions including reverse transcription), along with an understanding of their underlying principles.

Ability to conduct experiments independently and proactively. Logical thinking skills, with the ability to work systematically and accurately. Ability to communicate effectively in Japanese. Fairness, integrity, and a strong commitment to teamwork. Willingness to continuously work toward improving the quality, reproducibility, and efficiency of experiments.

Comfort with the routine use of experimental equipment, electronic devices, PCs, and AI tools when necessary. Willingness to engage—even without prior experience—in metadata acquisition and organization tasks (including filming, interviewing, and editing). (Preferred) Note: The following items are not required for application.

Candidates who meet only the required qualifications are also welcome to apply. Interest in noticing minor anomalies or bottlenecks in experimental methods and using them as a starting point to refine and improve techniques. Willingness to actively engage in the launch and setup of new experimental technologies and equipment.

Experience in filming, video editing, audio editing, data organization, or related tasks. Experience in sequencing-related experiments (such as library construction and QC). Experience in highly demanding sample preparation (such as Ultra-long DNA extraction).

Thank you for your application. Please note that only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
